Ford Theater is another interesting site. Heck, you could spend a week just walking through the all the Smithsonian Museums alone.

I think we can handle most of the sites without a car other than Mount Vernon, but is that reasonable?

We put in a request for the White House tour and got approved so I'm pretty excited about that. I had read not to expect to get passes since spots are limited. Our whole family enjoys history and museums so I think this will be an enjoyable trip. Now we are just praying for good weather there and here. Last year's trip was to Montana & Wyoming and a little hurricane hit Houston while we were chasing wildlife.
Yes, if you are staying that close to the White House, you'll be close to most of the major sites. I rented a car once and it served absolutely no purpose. Traffic and finding a place to park are too much of a hassle. There are Uber's aplenty and be sure to compare against Lyft too so you get the best price.

We will be there May 24th thru the 29th. My wife and kids forced me to go. I wanted to do another Costa Rica fishing trip. I do love history and am kind of excited now. We are touring the White House May 27th. Also looking forward to doing a lot of the things mentioned here.

I haven’t read all four pages but if it’s not been mentioned, the National Air and Space Museum.

I have not read all of the comments, but make sure you check to see if you need tickets to the museums you want to go see. The tickets are free, but I do not want you to get up there and need tickets and the museum is filled up. For example, the Air and Space museum you will need to have tickets to get in. It also gets crowded, even with tickets. The last time we went, we went to both Air and Space musuems. I would recommend the trip down to the Hampton, Virginia Air and Space museum. That is the one with the SR71 and Space Shuttle. It is at least a half day for just that museum.

I going to USMC museum but will just have them drop me off and they, wife, son and FIL will go elsewhere. Probably go eat somewhere I wouldn't like, get a bunch of weird stuff on a pizza or something like that and I'll grab a hot dog....we will hit a couple civil war battlefields, monuments and museums. I put in for White House tickets but was probably too late, says to try over 2 months out but I was inside that window, Pat Fallon district, but we are open on dates so hopefully get them. I had no interest in FBI or Congress tours, will go look at the building maybe but that's about it don't want to step in sheet inside it.....I'm letting wife and FIL work it all out. We have a house and rent car since may go to stuff further away as well vs Uber.
