I’ve been involved in the hunting industry in some form or fashion for over 30 years. Have met a LOT of deer breeders. Have been on a LOT of breeding places. Have had a lot of clients who are breeders. I’ve guided hunts on breeder ranches. I’ve been “around” I guess you could say. Not once EVER has anyone mentioned any drugs for growing or manipulating antlers. I have heard stories about other methods used to manipulate antlers, but never drugs. Sorry Tim but I just don’t think it’s happening like you believe it is.

I wouldn't doubt you if bucks were 200" up to maybe 300" because that's plausible in certain cases. But 1,000" ?? And the other question would be, Is it illegal to use drugs to grow buck antlers? If it is or if certain drugs are illegal then of course they wouldn't tell you.

Do you really think a breeder using drugs would come out and say he was? Much less give the name or combo of drugs so others could use it?


I have no proof. I've never personally known a breeder close enough to talk about this. It's just my opinion drugs are in play here.

No, I have not been around 600”-1000” deer. Most folks have not. I have been around lots of 200”-450” deer. I’m not saying the drug thing doesn’t happen, I’ve just never heard of it. Granted, I don’t pay a lot of attention to what folks do with their own property and their own money, especially when it doesn’t affect me. Your adjective of “yuck” described that 1000” deer well. It’s sad to me to see that happen. But at the same time I do have some appreciation for the work and dedication it takes to grow some of these animals. Just not my thing. And I’m sure some wouldn’t like the great lengths we go through to try to grow BIG deer on our low fence hill country place. It’s all relative I guess.

I agree it takes dedication. If drugs are being used then that really hurts the people trying to grow antlers the right way. So it sort of is a big deal, at least to them.
