Growing up my grand and great-grand parents were pretty traditional names, but for some reason I'm the only one that called Dad's mom Maw Maw while everyone else called her Grandma. PawPaw, Granddaddy, Grandmother - who as a great is now Honey, Granny & Pa, Mema and a few others. I only had one formal name we used: Great Grandma Hartman. For some reason it was never shortened.
I'm G (was G-Daddy, but my grandbaby shortened it), and my wife is CeCe (her name is M.C., and her neices have always called her Aunt C, so they came up with CeCe for her grandma name)
How is this possible? As the oldest grandkid on both sides, I set the names. My sibling and cousins got in line or got their *** kicked. When I said it was gonna be Pop and Mimi, that's what it was gonna be. Ain't no "choose your own name for your grandfather" BS. I'm the oldest. I name them. The End.
Somebody needs to have a talk with your oldest grandchild....they're doing it wrong.
Nicknames for grandparents can be cute, but I don’t do cute. Ever. However, I’m not particularly crazy about traditional “grandparent” names, either. I can’t imagine myself being called grandma, granny, meemaw, mawmaw…or any iteration thereof, for that matter. My hair turns grey just thinking about it.
We had this same conversation several years ago in my family and I told everyone that I simply wanted to be called by my first name. My sisters and I called my paternal grandparents by their first names, as did their children. My thinking was that whatever worked for Sue and Herb (my grandparents) was good enough for me.
Unfortunately, my husband put the “big quietus” on that notion so, now, I’ve just decided to let my future grandkids call me by my initials.
We are going to be grandparents for the first time in January. I wanted my name to be ELHefe but the wife nixed that so I will be pops or what ever he calls me in German
