In my experience there is a direct correlation between treating staff poorly/being demanding, with bad tipping.

I'm one of those that think tipping is out of hand. Not really for a sit down meal, but for counter workers, fast food, coffee shops, donuts shops, etc. That is one thing I love about Europe, no tipping.

Point is, I ain’t paying 35% of extra charges plus a possibility of a parking fee on top of my meal prices. I can carry my order straight to the cook and tip them !

In many many many places we have learned just to go straight to the bar most times avoiding seating times, the drinks are fast, and the meal taken care of by the bar tenders which I DO TAKE CARE OF !

If you’re eating at restaurants that require valet parking yet complaining about tipping then I’d say you should probably reevaluate some things in your life.

Nope. I evaluated and arrived at my opinion

Lets talk about the scam of Valet parking, where they cone off close parking spots instead of hustling cars to other places which was the intent of valet parking.

                  ”I got your tip hanging”

Careful with this comment. just because you have to valet park does not mean the restaurant is nice. The owner of the parking lot, shopping center, etc may dictate the valet thing. Why? cause he charges the valet company and now he is making money off the parking rather than just let everyone park themselves for free. Same for any restaurant who has valet parking. The restaurant is getting a fee for that service. I put myself through college as a valet and my buddy started his own valet company. I know how it works. The quality of the restaurant increases the quality of the valet tips, but just because there is valet does not mean the restaurant is nice or expensive. Just means the restaurant found a new way to generate some income.

These days it does not mean its a nice restaurant and sometimes you have to pay a public parking fee

We, as a family, only eat out at a sit-down place maybe once or twice a month. I guess I have never paid any attention to whether it is before or after taxes. If the service is just terrible, I leave about 15%. If I have a good server that is friendly and knows how to make our experience enjoyable, I'll generally tip 30-50% depending on the meal cost. The way I see it, I remember what it was like to have a low income and that extra $20 or whatever won't even be noticed in my scheme of things but might make a big difference to the person it is going to.

Oh I get it, one of my sons is a server as well. But, and it isn't just him it is almost everyone to ever work in the industry, he complains about tips/lack of money and people out of one side of his mouth and then when I tell him he can make very good consistent money as a plumber, etc. he says he makes more for much less work as a server and I'm crazy. There is a huge disconnect with not only him but in my opinion the whole industry when that is the narrative. Even at hole in the wall places the food prices are high enough to where a typical tip is around $10 per table or many times more if there is a large group or alcohol is involved. If they serve 3 tables an hour at that rate, that is $30 an hour or the equivalent of what my wife makes as a teacher. I hear everyone talking about low income servers but an hourly rate that leads to a $60k per year income is not low income. It isn't rich but it isn't low income!

And I'm not against tipping but 15% was standard and more than acceptable before. Now it has to be 20-25% or your a cheap *** but again the reality is their raise shouldn't come from an increased percentage as a tip it already came from increased food prices.

I agree with you. I find it offensive!

What does a percentage of before or after taxes have to do with a tip?

I go to a favorite restaurant and have the huge 20oz ribeye and my wife has a filet mignon with a large appetizer. The bill comes to $100 and the waitress did a great job so I tip $25.

A few days later I go to the same restaurant and only get an 8oz chicken fried steak. My wife gets an 8oz NY strip and a small appetizer. The same waitress does the exact same job but my bill is only $60. The same 25% that I left for larger meal now only comes to $15.

The waitress did the exact same job and it was again the same excellent experience.

So why was she worth $25 one day and a few days later when I was not as hungry she was only worth $15? Because of my appetite?

I pay the restaurant for the food and the waitress for the service and I have no rule that they have to match.

Typically when I go out to eat, before the bill comes my wife asks how much we should tip since she usually carries cash and I usually only carry cards. We don’t look at the bill and try to guess any percentages. We pay for the service. I don’t care about 15% of $67.34, etc. If I had great service, I might tip $20-$25. I don’t care what percentage it is.

I surely don’t care if the tip is based on the final sale or before taxes.
WAAIITT, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait...everybody stop talking for just a second...

Where did you go to get a 20 oz ribeye, a filet mignon, and a large appetizer and get out the door for only $100???
