I did but only after it jelled in the pan, sliced in strips and fried.
I grew up eating 'mush'.. which was what you described. My grandmother made it a lot.. she was from Oklahoma. Other grandmother was from Arkansas and made grits.
My first experience was when I was about 8 and we were in Louisiana enroute to visit my brother who was at Keesler AFB. I didn’t know what it was, didn’t particularly like it, but there was some French salad dressing on the table and I topped it with that and ate it. My folks never let me live that down.
My dad’s from West Texas and my Mom is from Georgia, get up on buttery grits, eggs and a ham slice or bacon. Still make it a lot. Shrimp and grits I had never had till I went to LA. We had a dog growing up named Grits
I’ve been eating grits for as long as I can remember. As a kid I would eat them with butter and a little sugar, now it’s butter and a little salt and sometimes with cheese. Stone ground are the absolute best! They’ve always been breakfast food up until about 30 years ago when my then to be in laws served them at dinner with fresh fried fish! I’ll eat them at any meal.

In like the stone ground yellow if I have the option.
