Every encounter I have had with guys running dogs has been extremely irritating. I understand it has been a tradition long before I came here and I am not normal as I hunt on my feet and go where the dogs go, and that is the problem, they end up in my hunting ground when I am trying to hunt. Some of the guys I met were quite friendly but all have a touch of arrogance that they have the right to be there regardless of what the situation is for another.

Hog dog, cow dog, bird dog, coon dog, house dog. I don't care what they are there for. Dogs get loose, I get it. Dogs don't know what fences and boundaries mean, I get it. But it's the people that just let their dogs roam free to go where they please is what chaps my hide. I've had multiple neighbors knowingly just let their dogs roam free. Hell when I was younger I didn't think much of it as well. But like said above I have put my time in and made sacrifices to own not lease 2 pieces of land. I don't let my dogs roam free and I don't want someone else's dogs roaming my property either, especially not on purpose. If I ever need to cross their property I contact them and I make sure I have as good a relationship as possible so there is trust.

It's all about the intent with me, accidents happen but it better not be a regular occurrence.

With several others here, my biggest issue would be the trespassing part. And especially when I am sitting in the woods and have hogs being chased by dogs 20 yards behind me. That really ticks me off.

And I do not see how dogs crossing property lines in a chase is the same as retrieving an animal that was already shot. Just not the same in my eyes.

To me, it is as simple as just stay on the property you are working on or have permission to cross.

And a one time allowance for a particular day or weekend does NOT give permission for any day/anytime in the future.

One thing that I failed to mention earlier is that most people that lease pay 1000 on up to lease that spot. Now someone comes along and wants to hunt for free. I think the obvious solution is for a group of hog doggers to get together and lease some land that they could hunt with dogs if they want to. One reason I like my lease is that it has some hogs and I can hunt year round. If they want to hunt, pay for it like everyone else.

I guess I didn’t make myself clear. What do you hope to gain by starting this thread ? What’s the end game ? If it’s discussion you want, you got that, and a very respectful discussion so far. If you expect to win hearts and minds, I think you are SOL, because among the guys I know, nobody wants hog doggers except the hog doggers themsevles (and they probably don’t want other hog doggers) Good luck catching hogs, hope you don’t turn them loose, and good luck keeping the dogs where they are supposed to be.

Do whatever you want, I just don't want you to do it on my place or be on my place at all for that matter, for any reason.
Solid answer. I’ll add that any dog on my property behaving aggressively will be shot. Collared or not.

I got more than I had hoped for. I got a decent discussion. I was not looking for approval. I hoped to find some open minds and I think I probably did. I wanted people to know that not every hog hunter is some kind of an entitled young jerk. I am 57, have a college degree, stilled married to my high school sweetheart, do not drink at all, have worked for a computer company for 30+ years. Maybe I was hoping to change the image a little. That was all.

                  Interesting discussion…

First and foremost, we don’t have hogs and I’m
very, very glad that we don’t.

I don’t mind someone running dogs, but do understand not wanting it done while I’m trying to deer hunt. Damaging property would also be unacceptable in any circumstance, but just passing through hunting, I don’t see the big fuss.

I grew up running deer dogs and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, it’s illegal here now. The small, “woke”, out of state transplant minority kicked and screamed loud enough to get their way and ended an outdoor legacy for a lot of us. If you let a pack of hounds out and they crossed someone’s retirement 40, it would probably cause a nuclear meltdown or an aneurysm.

We have a lot of Texan and yankee transplants and they just don’t think like we do. In my experience, they’ll call the law before they call their neighbor. Just a different way of looking at property issues/use.

What if they did say no. Maybe one turned into a vegan or something. Just trying to find a situation more relatable to you. When me dogs get bayed they might stay for 12 to 24 hours so waiting as some have suggested sometimes is not a great option. My whole post is more of a what if since I have no issues with any of my neighbors either. Once again thanks for the response.

I don’t know squat about hunting hogs with dogs, but…….

You have already said you have gone on/will go on other ppls property to get your dogs without permission. And you seem convinced that this is a perfectly OK thing to do, elven though it is illegal!

That is the whole problem!!! Some folks don’t want you or your dogs on their property and you don’t want to see that as the issue!

Him.... Can I run my dogs on your place
Me... No I like to bow hunt for them
Him ... I can pretty much hunt any where I want and just tell the game warden that I was just retrieving my dogs

I can only go off my own experience but I have had other hog dog guys tell me they can hunt anywhere they want as long as they don't take a gun.

So put me down as having a low opinion of hog dog guys
Same problem in Louisiana for both Deer and Hog dogging. Helps to know the Sheriff and doesnt hurt to know a few mafioso's either. LMFAO

I enjoy dog hunting. But draw the line at trespassing. PERIOD. Threats to person or property are never taken lightly and assure you they will be acted on.

Everything you’ve posted makes you the exception and not the norm.

Hog doggers have the reputation they have because they’ve earned it.

You can’t see us that your dogs have never trespassed either. Glad you don’t cut fences and gates to go get them when they do, but many other have and continue to trespass

I ran in to this issue last year. I was about to turn in to our gate and a young man was at the road with a tracker. He was very nice and didnt go in. I started asking him questions and talking with him before I told him I hunt also to see if he would BS me. He was very honest with me and I appreciated it. I told him he could go with me in this one time to retrieve his dog and I also exchanged contact info. We went in and got his dog but I explained to him that we did not want his dogs on the property. I told him we have kids that hunt the h and we trap and rifle hunt to manage the damage. He was nice about it and I haven't seen any sign since.

Although his dog should not have been in there in the first place I do appreciate how he handled it.

Just to touch on some thing about leases, just because you have a hunting lease does not mean you can control every thing on that lease. If your lease does not say you have exclusive hunting rights for hogs you may not be able to control who does what.

                            I'll give you two examples.

I use to trap, do NV, and run dogs for farmers. They would pay me to remove hogs. I did not go in during deer season but right before and right after due to harvest and planting times. Yes we did hunt right by feeders but that was per the land owners. The deer hunters did not have a choice in the matter.

Another example is in my cattle leases I have the right to remove hogs that are causing issues for the cattle operation. Things like rooting hay fields or pasture, eating ground feed, etc. One property in particular I lease from an attorney and his hunters originally did not like the idea when I was trapping hogs out. He explained to them they were not given the exclusive rights to control who hog hunts. He retained those rights as the land owners.

Both groups of deer hunters were barking up the wrong tree because the land owners both had extensive damage to their property and did not think the deer hunters were doing as much as they could to prevent that.

I see both sides but as a leasee you need to understand what rights you have and don't have. Some guys that lease our neighbors got in to it with a young man running hogs on that property. The young man had permission from the land owner and it got very heated. They almost ended up in a bind trying to enforce some thing they had no rights to.

I am completely for letting people run their dogs. My neighbor has outworn his welcome though. A few years ago I put out a bunch of snares. Came back the next day to check them and several near his property line were gone. He was out working his cows when I set them and out in the field when I was checking them so I waved him down. He told me he took them down because he didn’t want his dogs getting in them. All were at least 10’ off his fence. When I asked for them back he said he hung them on the trees they were anchored to, but I did not find any of them. I am a hot tempered person and it has been known to get me into trouble, but I walked away without laying a finger on him. That was in the spring. That fall I had 3 or 4 friends bring their kids for the first weekend of youth season. First thing Saturday morning you could hear the dogs going at daylight. Sounded like they were on the back end of my property. Could hear them for hours zig zagging chasing animals. About 1030 I can hear something running towards my daughter and I and get her ready for a shot. Six dogs chasing a doe came right by us. A few minutes later four guys on horses, including the same neighbor. I tell them to get off the property and he says he’s just looking for his dogs. I tell him to leave once again and point him to the gate. An hour later one of my friends texted me and said he just had four guys on horses come by and they told him they were still looking for the dogs. My brother went and had a talk with them once again and told them to get off the property, in an attempt to save them and me the trouble from me confronting them again. That spring I was out setting snares and noticed an old wire gate they had built into the fence, that I hadn’t paid attention to before. I secured it, drove t posts a foot apart across the gap, and put three no trespassing signs. The next day 40 acres of my property burned to the ground after we left. We had not been in the area that burned at all. That summer I found a hole in the fence where a side by side was coming in. Put a camera on the hole and got the same neighbor on a side by side loaded with dogs along with 4 other side by sides with dogs and people loaded down, entering the property. Had another heated talk with him. This spring I got more pictures of teenagers on horses and hog dogs but no pics of the neighbor to confirm. I’m sure this is why so many people feel so negatively. If it weren’t for the snare and youth weekend situations I would’ve never had a problem with it. And I’d bet almost anything he was the cause of the fire.

I let different people hog hunt with dogs on a couple places, but not during deer season, we were headed to hunt a place and I got a call from a hog dogger saying his dogs were on my property “ I seen them the week before also “ I wasn’t very nice to him and told him I saw his dogs the week before while hunting with a grandkid, I told him to never hunt my place again if he’s going to turn dogs loose during the rut and mess up my grandkids hunting.
I ran dogs in my younger years, coon hunting, there wasn’t hogs back then, but daddy never would let us turn dog’s loose during deer season.
This is a sport to hog doggers, even if they were to catch them all they would just turn more lose to have them to hunt.
