    Question for Mormons

I do not want this to snowball into opinions from non-Mormons. I'd like people who really understand Mormonism to answer a few things.

    1. Do you believe what your prophet says is always accurate, even the first ones like J. Smith and B. Young?
    2. If America lifted laws to make polygamy legal would you and the Mormon Church become polygamist ASAP?
    3. Do you believe Jesus is the only way to salvation Or is it Jesus plus J. Smith equals salvation?

I lived in Salt Lake City, non mormon but lots of mormon friends. It's very interesting.......there is a book "The God Makers" that is enlightening but also controversial, it made alot of sense to me since I was around it.......I was Salt Lake City Fire so the "fraternity" didn't affect my employment but back then, 27 yrs ago, a friend had a hard time getting employment in banking business but much has changed since then. I will say very many of the beliefs I did not agree with and next door neighbor and friend was the local ward president, which is basically the pastor, and when we toured the Bountiful Temple prior to consecration he was able to explain a lot of it to me. We had other friends that were Bishops which is a step above the Ward level, only one neighbor ever tried to force belief's on me and when other neighbor saw him "visiting me" they told him to leave us alone and not bother us, he was a weird duck and they knew it.......other neighbor would come over to BS and tell me it was going down as a "visit".......when you talk Mormon, LDS, there are different groups much like the Baptist and some are more extreme than others, like the ones in Eldorado, Texas back in the day and many in Southern Utah, The Reformed church of latter day saints......non practicing Mormons were known as Jack Mormons. Nobody would ask you if Mormon it would be are you LDS, many times it could be obvious if you could see the garments or if in a home or business a picture of a temple or one of Jesus or a book of Mormon.

I lived among LDS and like I said had great friends that were LDS and while I didn't agree it was never an issue, ex wife and I even went to country dance at LDS ward house, church. This wasn't the exact answer to your questions but maybe it helps some. Much like every other religion some are much more devout or extreme than others and some are way over the top.......

The answer to your questions I can actually answer. The current Prophet, president of the LDS church, can change The Book of Covenants, which is not the same as the book of mormon, in coordination with the Quorum of the 12 which are the 12 elders of the church. These do not change the Book of Mormon but basically they are new visions from God that reveals "changes".......the polygamy issue was actually a revelation of convenience as there were many more women than men and I believe it was Mark Twain that said the women were so ugly there that if any man could marry more than one they were truly a saint.......polygamy does exist, my ex wife worked in dental business and multiple women would come in and kids would all have same last name but only one of the mothers would. It was obvious also in how they dressed, more like mennonite than modern clothing. Friends we gave our dog to her dad had 2 houses side by side and was married to a set of sisters next to them but those friends were drinkers so it didn't pass down.......

There is a level of salvation by faith and works.....read "The God Makers", it will answer your questions pretty much.

I did CPR on one of the quorum of 12 and ironic we took him to the Catholic hospital which was closest one, my oldest daughter was born at LDS hospital.

The history of polygamy and inbreeding did change the make up of their teeth, there was an anomaly of which I can't remember which my ex when in Richardson rarely saw but there it wasn't uncommon.

As a non LDS looking in it was sometimes convenient when a revelation was made to the Prophet, such as trading polygamy for statehood but that is just how I saw it but could have been coincidence.

Another interesting read on Mormons is about Sheriff Porter Rockwell, great read and he was a bad *** and personal body guard of Brigham Young and supposedly organizer of the Mountain Meadows massacre. When he retired from service the church, as it is called there, rewarded him with a bar at point of the mountain which is currently Draper. You need to read the books on him.

Been a long time but pretty sure I got most of this straight as I found it very interesting and give them credit for actually going to war with the U.S. government over their beliefs, may have to happen again soon.......

My wife is LDS. Here's a couple of links to answer your questions.

Two hundred years ago, on a beautiful spring morning in 1820, young Joseph Smith, seeking to know which church to join, went into the woods to pray near his home in upstate New York, USA. He had questions regarding the salvation of his soul and trusted that God would direct him.

My only Mormon interaction is from the TV Series "Hell On Wheels". I'll just sit back and read the comments.

Thanks Frisco and Ham. Those don't really answer the questions though. I understand what the LDS Church says/doesn't say at this time. I'd like some Mormons to chime in if they would.

The early Church was very clear the polygamy was and will always be part of the true Church. So very curious if the members believe it still be one day.
And question Blogs is important also.

Dude, fly to SLC, drive down to Provo, and start asking. They are the nicest people, and will tell you anything you want to know. Heck, they will give you their Mormon book. AND Provo is one of the cleanest cities I've ever been to. Not even gum stuck to the ground. Families all together, getting dinner, and having fun. No one drinks, but they also have no problem serving drinks.

The Bible has plenty of controversial topics that would stir the pot far worse then polygamy. It appears polygamy is what you are hung up on though.

I do not care if they think polygamy is good or bad. If they marry 1 woman or 30. I am curious if they believe their first couple prophets on this topic and if their Church would start that practice up again if legal.

Would be nice if a lot of you guys would be a little respectful and hit the back button instead of trying to derail the thread.

Also - These are not things one can just google
Go ahead and google it and try.

It would be nice if you quit inundating the site constantly, with irrelevant stupid questions, and then complaining about the answers you receive.....but here we are.

This is from a post that RR1 made a short while back so I believe he understands the questions he is asking:

I was so far off path long long ago that when God set it straight it was an eye opener.
Quick summary. I prayed to learn Gods word (I hate reading) and prayed for a wife. I ended up in Utah (nope I had no clue) became a Mormon and got married (even longer story). When the wife and I were only 6 months married we went through the temple. God smacked me in the head and opened my eyes and holy crap I thought I was screwed. It was literally night to day in 2 seconds. So I had to tell my new wife who's entire family was Mormon. Long story short we made it through, I have a great wife, and I was able to read the Bible mainly showing her how Mormonism was wrong. It's 100x harder than you'd think to tell a Mormon they're wrong FYI.
