Sitting on the top of a mountain in SW Colorado with a deer tag in my pocket. Seeing a few deer, but as luck would have it being that I opted to save my points and not grab an elk tag, I’m covered up in bugling elk. One bull being exceptional. It’s a sight to behold watching them do their thing above timberline in the mornings. What I’d give to trade my points in on a tag to have an opportunity at the big bull we’ve been watching. Good luck to all the hunters out and about, and those fixing to head out!

Second night heard the bugling and though it was a person.
Went back behind camp this morning and found out it is a bull.
Worked him about 30 minutes or so talking back and forth somewhere around 150 yds out.
He never came in, we think he crossed our trail back and got our scent, wind was good while calling. Found his tracks.
Found another real promising spot the spouse is going to hunt in the morning, lots of beds and good grazed grass sign.
I'm going back up in the morning and we'll be there til Monday.
We're headed up in 4.5 weeks for the cows, still don't have a plan together but starting to collect options and routes and managed to buy myself two additional days to go up a little earlier and acclimate.

Im heading up to CO friday for the last week of archery, OTC tag. In august, I hiked about 25 miles one weekend to put out some cameras up there, curious to see whats on them. Hoping that the camera intel helps me focus in on where to hunt this year. Haven't been able to even locate elk on public land the last few years.

This guy came in on a string last Wednesday evening in Northern New Mexico. Wasn't the bull I was hunting for but 100% the encounter I was hoping for! Frontal shot at 24 yards and he ran 80 yards and was done in seconds. My guide got it all on film and I will try and upload it to Youtube when I get a chance! Good luck to those still hunting.
