We used to hunt a place on Hwy 7 between Centerville and Crockett and my uncle seen 2 wolves that he said were more of a grey and black. He claimed to have seen them once in his stand and another time close to our camp one night.

My Family owned a small parcel of land West of Centerville and South East of Kosse...SOUTH OF HWY 7. During 1965-70.....we spotted several of them through these years. I remember hearing them working the sundown....not coyotes...they yipp a lot....these guys howled and ran at the same time...covering a lot of ground as they worked the pack. We spotted several that worked in on us as we worked a chainsaw...sneaking in to stare at us before bolting off through heavy a thick brush. They did not act like coyotes and I had a pack of them follow me through heavy timber, after an evening hunt....working back into camp in pitch dark. I would take a few steps and hear them behind me about 100 yards following..I stop...they stop. I moved...they moved. Needless to say....I was a bit freaked out about it and came into camp with my 30-30 held in a ROCK AND ROLL position, eyes wide open and ready to spin to blast! LOL My Grandpa and Dad sat in camp listening to me, and them, during my last 200 yards of leaves, twigs and footsteps heard with the pack behind making rustling noises as they followed me. Grandpa and Dad laughed their butts off...knowing my mind was racing a million miles per hour. Dad simply stated "We were ready to hear the old rifle bark!" To this day Dad an I still talk about that incident and several others related to these guys. My thought was we were looking at Red Wolves or cross-breeds that managed to mix Coyote with Red Wolf during the period. Needless to say....they don't act like coyotes and they are as big or bigger than a German Shepard.

I think I saw a red wolf a few weeks ago! Me and my dad have been pondering this. He saw it running away from my stand from the truck. It came down a deer trail and I thought it was a deer by how red and tall it was. It walked within 15 yards of me and heard me when I drew. The sheer size of it really made me wonder what it was but it looked just like a tall more reddish coyote. It was as big as my lab!

Outdoors Video: "Extinct" red wolf caught on video?
            Chester Moore, Jr.
The Port Arthur News The Port Arthur News Wed Nov 02, 2011, 10:49 AM CDT

PORT ARTHUR — Outdoors Editor Chester Moore has contended for years that red wolves which were declared extinct in the wild in 1980 are still in existence in Southeast Texas.

"This great species had problems hybridizing with coyotes but science has had many problems defining what a red wolf really is. Some believe they are simply fertile hybrids between gray wolves and coyotes while others are not so sure. The bottom line is there are animals here that are definitely not coyotes. They are something else, much closer to what we consider a red wolf," Moore said.

"And the bottom line is if it looks like a wolf and howls like a wolf it is probably a wolf. Plus if it can't be classified as a red wolf because it has coyote blood, then you can't call it a coyote if it has wolf blood. There are some unique creatures still living here in our area."

The footage here is vintage Critter Cam material taken with an old motion-sensing VHS camera in Jefferson County. It shows an animal very wolf-like. Notice the German shepherd like stance, the long legs in proportion to the body, large ears and wide head, all typical of red wolves or at least red wolf type animals.

If it was a wolf, hunting will get HARD! I would Delete this thread before the wolf huggers find it and enact all sorts of crazy stupid legislation. The wolf huggers have ruined hunting in WY and Elk herds are about 1/10th of what they use to be. Next time kill them all or they will kill every thing in their path. Wolves will hunt for sport. Not sure what the laws are now in TX but just do what you got to do and don't break the law.

In many areas of Louisiana we have what is being called coy-dogs, its a cross between a yote and wild dog. They get really big and resemble both a yote and wolf much more than a dog......

Yes, we Texans know about coy dogs. Rob, red wolves are not as big as my GSD...maybe those little skinny head backyard breeder ones...but not true west german bloodlines.

I am starting to think that all the professionals are wrong.....everything they say does not exist anymore is seen all over East Texas.

We need to set up a bait station with a dead hog to try and get some pictures of these bad boys!

TP&W biologist told me back in the late 80's that there are no big cats in East Texas. Have been seeing them all my life in Nacogdoches County...You never know what you will see in the woods.
