I hunted all three days and didn't really see much in the way of big bucks or does. Had plenty of small bucks come in and a few does but could not get a shot. I did pass on a 130-135 9 pointer 10 minutes into the first day, a move that I should not have made.

Glad to hear I am not the only one.

Russb, did you hunt Harris?? I think we talked for a second Thursday morning.

I also passed a 130's 9 point during the "A" segment. I was at full draw and he stopped broadside at 12 steps in the middle of my shooting lane. That's OK, I wanted a bigger buck at "H". I was hunting in the NE side of Big Mineral, where were you? I wonder if it was the same buck?

Day one I saw 1 mature doe in the early am. She was motivating along pretty good with a large black dog chasing behind her. That evening I passed a buck with 3 on one side (brow was broken off at beam) and a 6-7" straight up beam with a couple of inches of crab claw on the end on the other. Nothing else spotted except one rabid squirrel that nearly jumped on me (Yes, Tommy, after talking to you I had my "squirrel" boots on! Jay and Rusty just shook their heads and grinned when I told them I heard they were a snake rescue unit.)

Day two, finally a doe walking up the hill straight to me right after first light. Heart pounding, here is my free pass was running through my head. Alas, once it hit about 40 yards I could see that my "doe" had suddenly grown little pointy antler things on it's head about 3" long so it got to walk by at 8 yards. I went in the middle of the day to watch one of our S&S youth football teams play in Denison. 27-0. Go Rams. Back to the wood in swealtering heat. Nada for the evening hunt except mosquitoes.

Day three, I had a 90" or so 8 point walk by at 8 yards on the same trail the spike took the day prior. He gets to keep walking. Come back and see me in about 3 years fella. Also saw a fawn or small yearling walk by at 42 yards. Couldn't tell if it was a doe or button buck, but wasn't shooting in either event. It was so hot by noon I said the heck with it and hauled my tripod out of the woods. Didn't hunt Sunday evening.

So, my lucky streak of 3 straight years with a doe went down in flames this year and it's back to the draw for me. I was covered up with does and bucks of all ages and sizes last year every day. This year I hunted the same spot and it was a very different story. Not really sure why, but that's the way it goes.

That black dog musta got around. He ran a spike by me Friday morning. One helluva deer dog, he didnt hesitate one bit jumping in the creek where the spike did to cross. And he was a good 5 minutes behind the deer.

I too saw that same black dog chasing does friday morning. I hunted Harris on the south side of the creek that crosses lawrence lane. I had seen a huge buck scouting the area the weekend before, that is why i passed on the 9 pointer. But none the less the buck I was after was taken sat. morning. There is a pic posted on here of the buck after it was shot.

Sounds like somebody needs to train that black dog to run coyotes. And rabid squirrels.

I understand the legacy of H#%%@@, but passing up 130"+ deer on public land is ludicrous. I'm impressed by your willpower to say the least. Hopefully, everything works out for you and you connect on that once in a lifetime trophy. I saw a 140" 8 pt. standing in the middle of the road in a refuge in KS 3 days ago. I was begging for a permit.

A 130 class deer in Grayson county is an average buck from my findings this is my first year to hunt this area but i have killed a few P&Y and its one of those deals where you set your bar higher if thats what you are after and not settle for less or you wont kill those 160 or better deer if you shoot the first 130 you see. But to each his own. I think you should harvest what makes you happy not your buddies or anyone else. Just my 2 cents

Looks like its going to be about the same as this weekend, from the reports I have been getting. But we all know how it is here in Texas you never really know.
