I had an abscess on a molar that was on the gum line next to my cheek. It finally got so swollen and painful that Oragel didn't work. I finally broke down and got a #11 Exacto knife blade, sterilized it and cut open the abscess. Talk about a sweet relief, followed by a horrible taste! I rinsed with peroxide and then a minty mouth wash to kill the flavor. Thank goodness that incident is long behind me, because the pain was intense.

Been through all that about 6 weeks ago. Had a root canal done and temporary filling on it till the infection all goes away then will do a final filling after cleaning it all out again. Once I got the antibiotics from the dentist it stopped hurting enough to make me crawl back in from the windowsill but was definitely all better for sure when the specialist did the root canal to relieve the pressure.

Out 4 months last year, with a botched root canal, second root canal, found out tooth had a linear crack that wasn't visible on X-ray..
Pulled tooth, 4 rounds of antibiotics during all this, a round of steroids, continued low-grade fever, bleeding ulcer from one of many pain killers or antibiotics.
Sick from Sept-January, shortly after turning 50.
I don't want to do 50 again.
Get it fixed, now.
