Any noise supression on a firearm is illegal. However, noise supression on an airgun is not.... Just saying.
Airguns come in calibers ranging from 22 to 50, and a nice 25 caliber airgun will cost less than the modifications you would have to make to a firearm plus the Class III stamp, which is $200 BTW. The hardest part of getting a Class III stamp can sometimes be getting approval from the county sheriff.
Check out www.pyramidair.com for a variety of airguns. You might not even need to supress them.

It is not illegal to have a suppressor on a firearm. Downside is you for every one you have you have to pay a $200 (luxury) tax...don't know the exact name of tax. Also, you will forever be registered with the ATF and cannot let it out of your site without paperwork from ATF. Pretty much big daddy gets to watch over you....same with automatic weapons.

Illegal.
You can buy a 22 suppressor for ~ $200, pay the $200 NFA tax stamp and probably around $100 to thread the barrel on your .22. Then you would be legal but you can only hunt non-game animals with an NFA firearm (ie. machine gun, SBR, suppressor equipped). Squirrels should be ok.
The Aguila subsonic ammo is 60 grain so it may not stabilize in most .22 rifles. It works fine in AR type rifles with faster twist rates.
You can buy CB 22 ammo which is subsonic but it will not cycle semi auto guns so you have to manually rack the slide on them but they are very quiet. Similar to a loud pellet rifle.
