Yo fo sho right on that Dale.

They used to make some of that wire with these things called barbs and they were almost two inches long. Tore up to much leather on the hoof so they made the "barbs" smaller.

I still wouldn't do it though.
Would be my luck they would knick a jugular and take out the fence then fall on the feeder and wreck that too.

Actually it's a good idea if the panel barbs are short, but long ones is asking for trouble.

use field fence, it is about the same price, it is taller, you can get it tight enough to hold up and you can cut an low hole in it for the deer/fawns to come in and out, makes them easier to shoot when you know where the will cross the fence and it makes an easy gate on one side by just looping the end over the last post....

You could always just stay home and get your goat "enebriated".

I understand what your saying Dmo, BUT, not that i think Jason would do it, please do not "spike" the top. We can argue all day long IF a cow would get hung up or not, but one thing is not arguable, if one did, ( like bobcat said )we would be without a lease! Not worth the risk. I don't remember who said it, but it has to have something to do with size. My pen which is on the same property about +/- 3/4 of a mile a way is made out of sheep and goat 4" x 4" mesh 48" tall with a tension wire top and bottom, moderately tensioned. It has survived 6 years and the cows haven't damaged it. The only difference i see is the size. It's probably 30 foot in diameter, cows can't reach the corn on the ground and hogs can't get under it because of the tension wire on bottom. Jason, i know you have seen it, the description is more for other folks. It has worked for me so far, but it was an *** whipping to put in!

please do not worry about my goat. he is just fine. your idea to "spike" the panels is very good, seeing how everyone has agreed with you. considering if a cow get hurts by your booby traps, you will be off the lease. not to mention how beneficial your "spikes" would be to the deer herd. you didn't seem to address what would happen if a deer got caught on your "spikes".

Have you ever actually seen a deer? Given the number that survive in a given year after a carbon "spike" has been passed through, or stabbed several inches into their lungs......I'm thinkin a ONE INCH LONG piece of 8 guage wire, with a 45 degree angle cut on one end probably won't do much more than cause mild irritation. And it WILL NOT "impale", or otherwise maim them. But it WILL keep cows from leaning on it.

I'll heed the advise in your old signature now....though I fear it's too late.

how many times must i tell you that you are right. the "spikes" are a great idea. when deer get their hooves and hides stuck on them and stay there for a couple of weeks. i hear it makes a great buck attractant when you have deer caught in your feed pen. and all the noise and commotion they make might even keep the cows away.
                win win situation.
additionally, please quit referencing my signatures. i put them theere so i know what they say.

not to make everyone on this site mad at me, but that was me who said to just make the pen bigger. however, i am probably not the only one. i have had my first weekend ruined five years ago by having a deer stuck in my feed pen by getting stuck in the feed pen. i did not see the numbers of deer i did post hangup.

Just make it bigger smart, I know it's late, but just a few added panels would do the trick. I personally wouldn't shave the tops of the posts into spikes, or however was recommended. I wouldn't want to kill or injure deer that are trying to get into my feed pen.

If it's the right deer hung up.......I could just whack 'em in the head like they do in high fences.....

I'm not gonna spike it...the lease boss has spoken and I've spent enough this year to not have to pay to replace the landowners mobile bulldozers.

With the acorns down and if my cameras are as blank as they were last week, i'll rebuild this weekend....bigger and better while everybody else is hunting. What's another $150 in panels........

Your not the only one not seeing anything. I can't find a buck to save my life! All does and spikes and it's frustrating.

Whatever concoction you come up with Smart, I can't wait to help build it this weekend.

Whatever it is, I bet it will be analyzed, thought about, re-thought about, posted about on the forum, drafted by a CAD designer, submitted to NASA and the Dept. of Weights and Measures so that it is certified dead-on balls accurate, and then when all is ready, you'll change your mind anyway and just add a strand of barbed wire.
