Ballistically, the 10mm is superior to the 45acp. Availability of ammo is in favor of the 45. Coolness-10mm. If you are willing to spend a little more on ammo and buy in bulk to keep a supply, get the 10mm. If you want to go to walmart for a box of shells twice a year, get the 45.

I really need to shoot my 10mm. Its over a year old and still unfired.

I'm talking only for the first shot...would there be enough umphh to cycle the action for the next pick up (conventional round)

to me, rat shot is a must for the first shot in a ranch pistol.
Hmmm, good question but I don't know. I don't shoot those wimpy 40 S&W loads.

...and they don't offer 10mm rat shot that i am aware of??

I'm a big fan of the 41mag but was always bummed CCI never offered a round for it. I quit carrying it at the ranch for this reason.

If the o.p. has rattlers where he hunts, the 45 wins

you should read up on why the 10mm was chosen and why the FBI 10mm load created the 40 S&W.
              Really?
Well I can't argue, just going off of what I had read and learned from dealers back in the late 80's when I used to shoot a lot. I've not kept up on cartridge changes and development for quite some time. Thanks for the update and sorry for passing along bad info.

                      Don't have a 10 yet. If I'm not mistaken, can't you shoot 40 cal in a 10? Like you can shoot 38 in a 357.

.45 and it would be all about ammo availability

Again. Ammo availability is a non factor.
