i worked as a server for 3 years and truth is most people who complain about tipping didnt intend to tip anyways (not directed at anyone here, just in general). they just find a reason to justify not tipping. and i assume most people tend to make a few mistakes in their own jobs but are EXTREMELY critical of a small mistake made by a server. I have only left a few bad tips in my life and that is because the server was non existent and they dont need to be waiting tables anyways. If i get good or great service i never leave less than 20% and depending on the bill will sometimes leave 100% or better because i know there are a TON of cheap people out there who dont tip which is why i quit waiting tables when the economy went bad. to me, when you go out to eat and expect someone to cook and serve you the food you have an OBLIGATION to pay for that, otherwise stay at the house and cook it your darn self. what people dont realize is it is not exactly about how much money you spend but how long you occupy a table. the longer you sit and BS the less volume a server gets which equals less money and its beyond frustrating that people sit for 2 hours and leave $10 on $50 when I could have had 4 tables in that time frame with smaller tabs but better tips because of the volume. Servers have bills to pay too and thats after they tip out bartenders and food runners and to go staff. when i worked at a texas land and cattle they would have promotions like kids eat free saturdays and parents would bring their kids and order the cheapest thing on the menu so their kids meal was free then couldnt afford to leave a tip, that is bs. if you cant afford to have people serve you then eat fast food or cook, if you can afford it then dont be greedy. i blow $10 a day easily and think about that when tipping because an extra $10 added to a tip helps make up for the cheap customers who never intended to tip in the first place. its a service industry and good service should be expected when paying for it but people do have bad days and it shows more than in most jobs because you have to interact with customers all day. as long as i can tell the server is trying to do their job and isnt just sitting in a doorway chit chatting while my food is getting cold or my glass is empty im going to leave a good tip. in fact i had lousy service last week and to top it off i ordered a margarita with a double shot that was obvious there was little to no liquor in it. when i asked the manager she rudely replied that she poured them in herself so i just ordered another shot and put it in myself at the table. I paid $18 for a mediocre margarita and left $30 on a $60 tab and wrote, "just think what your tip would have been if you had done your job, and your manager should learn what customer service means". i dont mean to rant but its amazing how many people out there are looking to get something for nothing and the things servers put up with or better yet the people servers put up with is enough for me to have a little pity.

We frequent the place about once or twice a month and is her favorite and a very nice place to eat. Normally the groups they sit you with are 8 people or more and they add gratuity on your check. Well last night there was only 6 people at our table and the food was awesome and prepared perfect in front of us.... But the waitress was less than middle of the road. We had to ask for a couple of things at least 3 times each in order to get them. And we had to wave her down to get another beer and to refill our waters. I was not completely ticked off but a little annoyed. But the kicker is.... The bill was almost 90 dollars which we expected, and I left a 10 dollar tip which I feel like represented the service we got. The japenese waitress had enough freaking nerve to stop my girlfriend and I and to tell us in her jacked up accent that " this is nice resteraunt! This is the best service you get! Tip to low!".
Are you FREAKING KIDDING ME?!? I wanted to chew her out. But instead I pulled the manager aside and explained my disgust and the fact of the less than acceptable service for that type of resteraunt. With that being said... I know they work for tips, but you should earn them! Especially when I am spending a C-note on what really is only about $30 dollar stir fry. Sorry had to get it off my chest.

you have to earn your tip, it is night a right you are given just because you became a waiter/waitress. The tip I leave is a direct result of the service I recieve. If the service sucks you get a sucky tip, if the service is great you get a great tip. I've tipped a 100% before because the service was that good.

Wait Staff is a Service Industry Position... Note SERVICE Industry.... If the kitchen is backed up, that is explanable so long as the wait staff COMMUNICATES with the tables. People will tend to be more understanding if you just talk to them and let them know what is going on...
Poor service, regardless of how busy the establishment is, is TOTALLY unacceptable. Too many times I have left no tip and would have no issues in telling the wait staff why. I have no issue in tipping Very Wellfor great service, but poor service will equal No Tip...
I work in the service industry and I cannot tolerate Poor Service, not by my staff or by any staff that are working in the field..
Just My Opinion...

honestly waiting tables should be an hourly waged job, giving people the choice to tip whatever they feel is necessary is ridiculous. if you dont do your job you get **** canned simple as that. then the cost of hourly employees should reflect in the price of the food. you give the customer power when they get to decide what they pay and alot take advantage cause its the only time they get to boss someone around and they arent even REQUIRED to pay for it. Not to toot my own horn but i was an extremely good waiter and a salesman to boot so i made decent money most of the time but for the people you have to put up with it aint worth it.

First of all, I can't believe that place is still open. They must have a very loyal following. I remember going there when my family first moved to Texas circa 1983.
I totally agree on the percentage of tip you gave. I'm not sure I would have been levelheaded enough, but I'd like to think after she chased me down, that I would have demanded the manager void that receipt and leave ZERO tip.

a co-worker of mine goes out to eat with her husband frequently. They typically know what they are getting and roughly what the bill will be. he puts 25% out on the table in small bills and tells the waiter/ess that this is their tip and it's to be earned. if the service is good, it will remain - if not, he'll take some back as he sees fit. absolute jack*** thing to do but he gets good service every time.
