    Tip amount Rant

Last night before going to see a movie, my girlfriend and I decided to have a nice japenese steak dinner at Kobe steaks in Addison. We frequent the place about once or twice a month and is her favorite and a very nice place to eat. Normally the groups they sit you with are 8 people or more and they add gratuity on your check. Well last night there was only 6 people at our table and the food was awesome and prepared perfect in front of us.... But the waitress was less than middle of the road. We had to ask for a couple of things at least 3 times each in order to get them. And we had to wave her down to get another beer and to refill our waters. I was not completely ticked off but a little annoyed. But the kicker is.... The bill was almost 90 dollars which we expected, and I left a 10 dollar tip which I feel like represented the service we got. The japenese waitress had enough freaking nerve to stop my girlfriend and I and to tell us in her jacked up accent that " this is nice resteraunt! This is the best service you get! Tip to low!".
Are you FREAKING KIDDING ME?!? I wanted to chew her out. But instead I pulled the manager aside and explained my disgust and the fact of the less than acceptable service for that type of resteraunt. With that being said... I know they work for tips, but you should earn them! Especially when I am spending a C-note on what really is only about $30 dollar stir fry. Sorry had to get it off my chest.

        I couldn't agree more.

We ate at Howl at the Moon, a few weeks ago. It was just my wife and I on the check.
When the bill came, it had a line that said "voluntary gratuity 18%". Voluntary? REALLY?
This wasn't even for service. A guy came, took our order, the brought us the food ... NOTHING else. I scratched out the word voluntary and wrote manditory above it. I hope they got the hint, but I seriously doubt it.

I've gave the manager a "talking to" more than once when I've had sub-par service and got the mandatory added gratuity. Sometimes it seems like in the server's mind they don't even have to make an effort to provide good, prompt, courteous service because they're tip is guaranteed. Both times the manager revised the bill and allowed me to add the "appropriate" amount of gratuity.

The manager listened to us and said " well they do work for tips. But she should not have approached you directly". I told him I understand that they do, but the service did not deserve more than what I had gave. And actually had she said that before I signed... I would have indicated that none was for her and the total tip should be given to the cook.

It was just a normal japenese voice. But messed up for Texas

At that point I would have asked for my tip back and been rude enough about it to get it back. That is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in my world. If you want a tip then earn it. Waiters and waitresses know how it works when they take the job. If you want to make good money, then you have to work for it.

I have always wanted to sit down with a stack of cash on the table. Explain to the wait staff that the stack of cash is their tip. Each time that I receive less than desireable service (tea glass less than 1/2 full, mess up order, generally unfriendly service, food order wrong. etc etc) then I start taking bills away.

I bet that would shape up some attitudes.

In my opinion tipping is completely optional to begin with. If they don't like working for tips then find another dang job.

And where did this 15% deal come from? Do they have to fill my tea glass up more often with a $30 steak dinner, than they do with a $6.99 cheeseburger????

I tip regardless of service, I can't not just give 'em nothing cause they didn't do a good job...sometimes things get out of their hands...get in the weeds for some reason, maybe their fault, maybe not...anyways I always tip something if it's the least amount for cruddy service...usually just double the tax...I only feel like this cause I was once a server so I know you can't have a good night all the time...

Lmbo!! That is exactly what came to mind, and I wish I had said it now. I might have said something a little harsher than that out of shock. But I couldn't post that on here.

I ALWAYS tip something too. I have left a 5 cent and 10 cent tip before. So that there is no question in their mind that I tipped that amount on purpose and didn't just forget to leave a tip.

We had a waiter at Gaido's in Galveston follow me to the parking lot to complain about the tip.

We were there on a weeknight, semi formal attire required. We wanted a quite dinner. What we got was a mouthy, over talkitive waiter who had to be ask multiple times for simple things.

That was his last mistake. The manager terminated the waiter on the spot and was sincerely apologetic.

Later in the week we had dinner there again. The waiter assigned to us was the finest waiter I have ever had anywhere. His name tag said that he had 41 years of service. You cannot fake sincere service.

                              He got a $200 tip.
