The manager, if he had any sense, should have undoubtably sided with you, the customer. His waitresses have no business talking to the customer about the tip, he should have said he would look into the matter and would advise the waitress of her poor and unacceptable behavior.

      Where did you work at?

I say this because at coaches clinic last year (or the year before they all kinda run together!) I had a lady server tell me that phrase when we went out to eat.

We had waited a long time to order drinks after we set down and this lady came up and said she was in the weeds? None of us had ever heards that expression before. I asked what she said and she couldnt recall. I guess it was just an everyday saying to her.

      Convo went like this:
Waitress: "Sorry guys I havent been around, I've been in the weeds"
Me: "No Prob. So you've been hitting the weed huh?"
      Waitress: "What"
Me: "Isnt that what you said?"
      Waitress: "What"

on second thought maybe I heard it correctly.

      Is this a common phrase?

Yeah, that's a common phase in the service industry. "In the weeds" translates to "busier than a one legged man in a ...." you can finish the rest.

I agree. Tips are "at discrection", not mandatory. I worked my way through college off of tips so I know and appreciate them and on normal service I leave 20%, but I still have no problem leaving 5% if the service was crap. Its fine if that person is having an off night, it will be reflected in their tips. But to me, if people find themselves getting the same amount of tips doing a poor job as they do when they work hard and do a good job, its only a matter of time before they are lazy and stop trying. I mean, why work harder for the same? Sometimes I busted my butt and the tip wasn't good. Oh well, just meant I had to hussle harder the next time to make up for it.

OH, and then there was a time when a (sub-par) waitress added a few bucks to her tip ... I think it was about $10.

My bride, being the CFO of our household, noticed the difference, when she was checking our account, online. She called the resturant and spoke to the manager. It went something like this.

Tina - Yes, we ate at your resturant the other night and left a $6 tip. When I checked my account, the debit was for $10 more than that. I double checked my reciept, and the tip was $6, not $16.

Manager - Ma'am, what time were you here?

                        Tina - About 7:30.

Manager - Yes, ma'am, who was your waitress?

Tina - The reciept says Sara (or whatever her name was).

Manager - OK. Let me pull that ticket.

                        pause

Manager - Yes, I found your ticket and it has $16 as the tip.

Tina - Well I can show you, on the carbon copy, where it clearly says $6.

Manager - Well, ma'am, I can see where someone might have changed that. The other numbers could have been changed and it not been real noticeable. This isn't the first time that we've caught Sara doing that. I'll have another talk with her. Could I intrest you in a free appetizer for your trouble?

Tina - What about my $10?

Manager - Well, I guess I could refund that, but it would take some time.

Tina - I'll be checking my account, daily. If it's not back in there in a week, I will start calling up the ladder, until I get some resolution. And no, I do not want a free apetizer ... I will never set foot in your resturant again. If you know that waitress was stealing from your customers and you didn't do anything about it, I won't have anything to do with that place. If the money is not refunded, you will hear more about this. Good bye.

The money was back in our account the next day. We'll never eat there again.

[QUOTE=Playa;3503630]I have always wanted to sit down with a stack of cash on the table. Explain to the wait staff that the stack of cash is their tip. Each time that I receive less than desireable service (tea glass less than 1/2 full, mess up order, generally unfriendly service, food order wrong. etc etc) then I start taking bills away.

I bet that would shape up some attitudes.

                          QUOTE]

I had a old buddy that would do exactly this. There would be six of us sitting around a table, and he'd put cash on the table and explain to the waiter that was the tip and would stay the tip as long as the service was excellent. If it was not, he'd just start putting bills back in his pocket. Most of the time, the waiter got a great tip, because they saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

My wife's best friend is a restaurant manager and they had an instance over a tip while eating out once. The guy serving them was more than bad, he just plain sucked! When they got the bill, they paid with cash and held up a five-spot for him to see it. It was the first time he came to the table right away. By the time he got there, they had lit it on fire and left it burning in the ashtray (back when you could smoke in some establishments). They then explained that was his tip and they had planned to spend it anyway, just didn't think he deserved it.
