        what restaurant?

i can't believe she would approach you and say that - completely asinine!

a co-worker of mine goes out to eat with her husband frequently. They typically know what they are getting and roughly what the bill will be. he puts 25% out on the table in small bills and tells the waiter/ess that this is their tip and it's to be earned. if the service is good, it will remain - if not, he'll take some back as he sees fit. absolute jack*** thing to do but he gets good service every time.

Bad service = bad tips. You can tell when the kitchen is backed up or if one person is being worked to death (happens a lot). If I can tell somebody is being over worked I will tip the waiter/ress appropriately and then tell the manager that because of his lack of scheduling their pay will probably be less and its not their fault. My friends always freak out when I call the manager over for a talk. If I get great service (like really good) I will also speak to the manager and tell them how good my experience was. It works both ways

My bride, being the CFO of our household, noticed the difference, when she was checking our account, online. She called the resturant and spoke to the manager. It went something like this.

Tina - Yes, we ate at your resturant the other night and left a $6 tip. When I checked my account, the debit was for $10 more than that. I double checked my reciept, and the tip was $6, not $16.

Manager - Ma'am, what time were you here?

              Tina - About 7:30.

Manager - Yes, ma'am, who was your waitress?

Tina - The reciept says Sara (or whatever her name was).

Manager - OK. Let me pull that ticket.

              pause

Manager - Yes, I found your ticket and it has $16 as the tip.

Tina - Well I can show you, on the carbon copy, where it clearly says $6.

Manager - Well, ma'am, I can see where someone might have changed that. The other numbers could have been changed and it not been real noticeable. This isn't the first time that we've caught Sara doing that. I'll have another talk with her. Could I intrest you in a free appetizer for your trouble?

Tina - What about my $10?

Manager - Well, I guess I could refund that, but it would take some time.

Tina - I'll be checking my account, daily. If it's not back in there in a week, I will start calling up the ladder, until I get some resolution. And no, I do not want a free apetizer ... I will never set foot in your resturant again. If you know that waitress was stealing from your customers and you didn't do anything about it, I won't have anything to do with that place. If the money is not refunded, you will hear more about this. Good bye.

The money was back in our account the next day. We'll never eat there again.
              that's awesome!
I like the way she rolls.

We frequent the place about once or twice a month and is her favorite and a very nice place to eat. Normally the groups they sit you with are 8 people or more and they add gratuity on your check. Well last night there was only 6 people at our table and the food was awesome and prepared perfect in front of us.... But the waitress was less than middle of the road. We had to ask for a couple of things at least 3 times each in order to get them. And we had to wave her down to get another beer and to refill our waters. I was not completely ticked off but a little annoyed. But the kicker is.... The bill was almost 90 dollars which we expected, and I left a 10 dollar tip which I feel like represented the service we got. The japenese waitress had enough freaking nerve to stop my girlfriend and I and to tell us in her jacked up accent that " this is nice resteraunt! This is the best service you get! Tip to low!".
Are you FREAKING KIDDING ME?!? I wanted to chew her out. But instead I pulled the manager aside and explained my disgust and the fact of the less than acceptable service for that type of resteraunt. With that being said... I know they work for tips, but you should earn them! Especially when I am spending a C-note on what really is only about $30 dollar stir fry. Sorry had to get it off my chest.
She must have a bad attitude. $10 on a $90 tab is just over 10%. Also, $90 for two people isn't your local Chilis, so I would assume good service is expected with the price. Very unprofessional to approach you for leaving a 10% tip. I could see it if you left nothing, but 10% for bad service, that's generous.

help me understand what is jack arse about this? in everyother commercial transaction in our everyday lives the terms are clearly stated. for example, I will pay "x" amount if you perform such & such sevice(s) or deliver such & such goods ( or any combination of goods & services). why must we continue to ccept such ambiguity in the food service industry?

its a great idea & i'm doing it the next time I go out.

I not only have a choice in where I eat, but if I dine at a restaurant at all. and frankly i'm tired of paying more for crappy food & then expected to pay more for even crappier service. most servers sense of entitlement is absurd.

To the OP, I would have caused a bigger scene than she started, WITH the act of retrieving the $10 off of the table.

With that being said, restaurant service doesn't always go hand in hand with waitstaff service. There are times that places are very busy and short handed. This may not be the result of management not scheduling enough employees, some employees call in at the last minute leaving the waitstaff short handed. If a waiter/waitress is busting their *** trying to catch up with every table, not just "out of sight", they'll still get their deserved tip. If it's not that busy and service is horrible, empty beer or tea glass, finished plates remaining on the table for an extended period of time, not checking how the meal is, if we need anything else, etc., is an automatic deduction on tip.

Some of the places that have the gratuity included, I'll request that charge not be included on the total bill. Reason being that I'd rather pay the bill with a credit or debit card and pay the tip with cash.

As Kevin mentioned above with the additional $10 wrote in on the tip amount, you have NO IDEA how often this happens.

As far as the stack of cash before the meal begins, I remember someone telling me that someone (who, I don't remember) would walk into a restaurant, be seated and when the waiter/waitress would greet them at their table, he would show them a $100 bill. He would then rip it in 1/2, lay it on the table, the other 1/2 in his pocket and say, "this is your tip, if you do a good job, you get the other 1/2". Smartass? yes. Effective? YES!
