    Want to Become a Landman

Ok I've had a few guys on here help me out with what direction to go into in the oil field...I have no experience. After researching and talking with a good friend of mine who is a landman that lives in the Dallas area, I have decided this is really what I want to do.

I will be moving to Houston in June, any body on here a landman or know of a company that will give a newbie a chance?

My father is a land man and had ZERO experiance as a land man....BUT had worked in the pipeline business as a QC for years, so he knew what was going on so to speak. I also know several others that I dont know had much experience and they got a job. Its like anything else in this world bro, its who you know not what you know. Your friend should be able to put in a good word for you... Good Luck!

The oilfield is all about having an in. Sending resumes to random companies is about the same as throwing them in the trash especially if you dont have any oilfield experiance. Have your buddy put in a good word for you with his company, that would be your best bet.

Landman is good gig right now with all the shale plays going on. The only thing bad about it is there have been thousands upon thousands of new landmen hired without much prior experience. There is a finite number of shale plays, so when the discoveries slow down (it is still good right now) there will be a ton of excess landmen. A lot of the new hires are actually young J.D.'s.

Thanks for the help guys. It seems the "who you know theory" applies in all aspects of life

Practice up on your lying skills in the meantime. How can you tell if a landman is lying to you? His lips are moving.

I appreciate your insight. Unfortunately, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. You may have had a bad experience, but I can assure you there are more than just me who take pride in representing our clients in an honest and straightforward manner.

To the OP: what sort of education and work experience do you have? I may be able to point you in a the right direction.

Have you tried other places in the state instead of Houston. The west Texas area is a large area with a lot of companies that all are drilling. The company I work for currently has 30 rigs drilling. The last time I heard there are somewhere around close to 300 rigs drilling in the area.

It's taken me a while to get my bachelors because I've moved around so much but I will be completely finished this summer. As far as oil experience goes I have none. I do have a small background in real estate as well as very good computer skills and people skills. I'm not an annoying salesman personality but I have met very few people that I didn't get along with.

I don't want to sound like a jack*** but I have a pretty high IQ and am a very quick learner. If I could get my foot in the door I would be a loyal employee and work my way to the top.

I will definitely be living in houston but am willing to travel anywhere for work.

Are you moving to Houston as part of your search, or for some other reason?

I know exactly what I'm talking about. I've dealt with quite a few landmen in the last couple of years. I would only consider only one an honest individual. The rest were pathological lying pond scum. It was quite nice actually meeting an honest one.

Well, hopefully one day you'll have the opportunity to meet me or any of the 45 or so landmen I work with on a daily basis. We don't lie to anyone, anytime, about anything. I hate to hear that you've had such a poor experience.

In the future, rather than pigeon-holing me with a bunch of low rent jackwagons you've had the displeasure of dealing with, how's about just offering up some constructive advice to the gentleman trying to start a career, or - better still - biting your tongue. I'm one of those pesky folks who doesn't take too kindly to being called a liar.

For what it's worth, I hope you didn't lease anything to any of those "pond scum" fellas. Their dishonesty speaks more to the company they represent than anything.

Gotcha. PM me with some info on what type of real estate experience you have, as well as what you're getting a degree in.
