10X or 20X felt hat

im getting a custom hat made at catalena hatters in bryan. as of right now, they are making me a 10X but im thinking about changing my order to a 20X. for their hats, 10X is pure rabbit and 20X is 50/50 rabbit and beaver. there is a $130 difference between the two. i will wear this hat hunting and working at the ranch as well as out around here and drinkin beer with buddies. i want a low cost hat that i wont constantly be worried about messing up, but i want a good quality one that will last me a lifetime. what do yall think i should do?

... I don't think you should get a hat without some beaver content. Based on your own stated criteria, I say get the 20x.

I have a 10X Catelina. It's too thick and too pliable.

I have a 20x Stetson that is thin, firm, and been through the ringer. Spend the money and get a good hat.

It all depends on the brand....I've seen 20x hats that are junk and 6x hats that are fantastic. Go to Catalena's and feel of both....see which one generally has the best body and feel. Just because it has a lot of X's doesn't necessarily mean it is better. I have a Resistol Black Gold 20X from 1985 that still looks great, however I have a newer 6x from another maker that I like just as well. It all comes down to feel.

The best 20X hat i have ever owned was a Bailey. I have a resistol 20X now that is great but it wasnt my Baily. As far as Catalena, I always figured if his hats were as ****ty as his bareback horses there was no need to bother.

I like my 30X Stetson it has been going for more than 25 years and still looks great..

Sammy Catalina had the worst bucking horses in the PRCA. So I just never would consider his hats. Personal thing and know nothing about his hats.

i changed to a 20X. the 10X will last me 20-30 years if i take care of it, might not hold up that well in wet weather and to everyday use/abuse. the 20X should last my whole life under the same conditions. i had the money to spend and thought it would be a good investment.

Definitely the 20x it will pay off in the long run and besides any marks or anything just adds character.
