I have a cooler same problem. Throw some silicone gasket stuff or silicone caulking. Works like a charm!!!

I've handled (don't know how many coolers (hundreds) over the years) the only thing I normally had problems with would be hinges don't remember ever having one crack inside although we all know plastic will get brittle and easily crack. Going to be tough to prove "they" did it as when you dropped off the chest it was full of deer. As far as the smoked meat I think the processors should charge a finished price by the pound not a starting amount but that's just me. Charge more if you have too but let the customer know he may start with ten pounds and only get 8.5. He will pay for 8.5 but adjust price accordingly so both parties know what to expect (nothing hidden). I can see both sides here. We tried to add enough pork so the customer would end up with the 10 lbs. he desired with the shrikage.

For the record, I think (not sure) the way this happens is when they drag your ice chest into their large cooler and leave it for a while. If your ice chest gets cold enough (and a frozen ham slips out of somebody's hand) it's gona crack...the cold weakens the plastic.

my processor keeps mine in a cooler usually if the hanging area is full....Never seen a crack like that. I think it is fair to ask for cooler price and meat shortage in money back. Since you dont have any deer meat I would say just let them keep it all if they decline but then you would be out of meat. Kinda sucks I dont know if you can do much

I agree with the loss due to shrinkage but maybe not that much? On the cooler, I have one just like it. I try to take pretty good care of my coolers and have no clue how the crack got there. I haven't ever left a cooler with the processor and doubt you'll get anywhere with that part of it. If I were the processor and thought I'd lose a customer over the deal I would probably work with you on the meat but be less likely to do much on the cooler. I know my processor (I've used the same guy for 20 years) always mentions the weight loss when making smoked variations. That's just good business to get that all out up front so there are no surprises. The biggest concerns with processors is always "do I actually get my deer or is it someone elses" and "did I get back as much as I should have". Start doing your own, then you will know.

As far as the cooler goes I bet he has the statement on the wall "Not responsible for lost or damaged items left on premises" For the meat problem I process and the rule of thumb for smoked meats is 10to30% weight loss do to liquid evap. (all depends on if the meat has been aged or fresh out of the field when you process it) I always add 5 lbs of meat to my total to make up for this and it comes out about right. Just let him know you paid for 20 lbs sausage and that is what you expected to get and he should make it right.
