    How to Kill Mesquite Trees?

Does anyone know of a chemical I can spray on a mesquite that will kill it? Looking to kill some mesquites now for firewood use later. I would rather let them stand and season so that the other guys on my lease aren't burning my hard earned firewood.

    Thanks, JES.

Remedy is what I use, it depends on how big they are to which method to use. Do a search for brush control and Texas A&M, they have a handbook on all this.

Remedy mixed with diesel is one way with mixed results.

            Good luck.

Remedy and diesel, cut the tree down as close as you can to the ground and spray/brush the remedy/diesel on the fresh cut.

Remedy + diesel will only kill the top and the roots will come back in my experience.

My next attempt will be Power Pellets

Used to spray the CRP field on our lease in La Salle county--we used a mix of Reclaim and Remedy in water with a bit of dish soap added, and got about a 90% kill on all types of brush. Using diesel as a carrier kills the leaves and prevents any uptake of the herbicide necessary to kill off the roots.

Ring it with an axe if you are just making fire wood.
To kill a lot of trees, though, Remedy.

Applied correctly, it will kill roots and all even on "larger" trees.

Timing is part of the equation. Must be applied well ahead of a rain, just after they start putting on canopy is better too.

I've always used a backpack, pump sprayer and apply from about a foot off the ground, all the way around the tree...careful not miss any. Spray and walk away, come back in about 9 month - year and I can literally pop them out of the ground like pulling turnips... with a large Skid Steer.... 20-30 ft root strands and all.
