    Tubby, at what point is it too much ?? Time for a heart to heart with the whole gang. Let them know what the outcome will be if this happens again. What next, a pickup ??

        Just tell everyone that the cost of the books will be deducted from their paycheck unless they are returned. Somebody will rat him out.

            Tubby I had an employee that stole from me also, you need to document everything and every talk you have with him. Have him sign every time. This way when you fire his worthless ***** and he files unemployment (which he will) you can fight the claim. You don't want your unemployment ins. rates to go up. But document then fire.
            What line of work are you in. I may be interested in his position.

              An employe that steals from you is not worth keeping. By not firing that person it gives the other employees the idea that it is OK to do so. So you invite others to steal from you. It is a never ending circle of events. You have now gotten to the point that you have two options...
              1. Get rid of the person, thus giving eveyone else the word that stealing will not be tolerated.
              2. Turn you head and expect anything and everything that you have at your business can be taken and it is OK to do so.
              By getting rid of the person might put you into a bad position for a short time, you will survive this and have someone else in that persons position in a short time and be better off with an employee you can trust.
              One word of warning, make sure you catch the person "red-handed" so everyone knows what has happened and it is not a "I think that was our thief"...employee trust is worth allot....

                  I'd put an IR game camera, in a bear box, in "movie" mode in the office. Turn it on every time you leave.
                  make it known that your office is off limits to employees unless you are in there. (but dont mention the camera)

                    Had an employee stealing time from me last year, he is no longer an employee. Best part was when the other guys asked what happened to him I told them and suddenly everyone output went up about 20%.

                        First, you have to determine who actually stole your books. Unless you can get sufficient evidence or a confession, I don't see how you can fire him.

                        Second, you need to fire whoever gave you that hair cut. If you paid money for it, they stole your money.

                            You need to cross train at your work place. I worked for a guy one time that made sure everyone could perform every job description satisfactory to his viewing. His saying was, "one monkey don't stop this show"! Later on someone commented, "yea, but one big Arangatang sure can screw it up"!

                              First of all I would have fired the guy.
                              Next on your missing books,put an email out about returning the books and tell them to place them on your desk.
                              Is their any way you can keep them locked up in your desk or have a system where they can ckeck out the books,that way you can track where they are going to.
                              How many offices do you have in Texas ?

                                If an employee will steal from you then he will steral from your clients, or other contractors on your jobs. This could lead to losing clients and jobs.

                                This could easily cost more than the $1000 a day you are now worried about.

                                The trust of your clients is your biggest asset.
