Tubby I had an employee that stole from me also, you need to document everything and every talk you have with him. Have him sign every time. This way when you fire his worthless ***** and he files unemployment (which he will) you can fight the claim. You don't want your unemployment ins. rates to go up. But document then fire.
What line of work are you in. I may be interested in his position.

An employe that steals from you is not worth keeping. By not firing that person it gives the other employees the idea that it is OK to do so. So you invite others to steal from you. It is a never ending circle of events. You have now gotten to the point that you have two options...
1. Get rid of the person, thus giving eveyone else the word that stealing will not be tolerated.
2. Turn you head and expect anything and everything that you have at your business can be taken and it is OK to do so.
By getting rid of the person might put you into a bad position for a short time, you will survive this and have someone else in that persons position in a short time and be better off with an employee you can trust.
One word of warning, make sure you catch the person "red-handed" so everyone knows what has happened and it is not a "I think that was our thief"...employee trust is worth allot....

A person in his position has over 8 years of training and $5,000 - $10,000 invested in his training. We don't have anyone to replace him and if we let him go, we would loose around $1,000 - $1,500 a day until we can get someone else hired/trained to replace him...
So we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot over $800 worth of books vs. what we gain from him working every day and/or what we'd spend on training....

First of all I would have fired the guy.
Next on your missing books,put an email out about returning the books and tell them to place them on your desk.
Is their any way you can keep them locked up in your desk or have a system where they can ckeck out the books,that way you can track where they are going to.
How many offices do you have in Texas ?
