    Stealing at work [rant]

I know what I'm probably going to do but I wanted to get some other opinions on this matter. Those that have seen me post about my employees before and think I'm a hard a... This is one of the reasons why. [start rant] An employee was off work for 6 months after breaking his knee cap and some ribs in a personal accident. He gets back to work and things start disappearing. He's already been caught at our other office red handed, lied about it and was caught in his lie. Got a slap on the wrist. What he "lifted" might have cost $75. Before his accident, he'd always had a few things "appear" in his possession. Flash forward to tonight. I walk outside w/ my lab, decide to walk into the office to check on things. We have "code books" for our industry from API. These things cost right at $400 each. I got 8 of them in Tuesday. I handed 2 out, kept one for my file and now there's only 3 in my desk. 2 of them are missing... FROM MY DESK! I know what you're thinking, they thought they needed them for work... which they do BUT they were not issued to them and they did not ask AND they were going thru my desk! The reason for this is because it will keep them from "taking" one and then coming to me later asking for one. I posted a note on the dry erase board asking for the thief to fess up and if they don't fess up and are caught for them to guess what's going to happen... [end rant]

Any other ideas how to handle this than what I'm planning on doing?

    Thanks

      Right to work State.
You can fire anyone for any reason. Or no reason...

Had the same problem a few years back, it was small stuff, electrical connectors, ballast, lamps, transformers, etc. wound up calling all of the guys in the shop and having a "come to Jesus" meeting. I didn't have to fire anyone, the guilty party quit there on the spot. Problem solved

He should have been fired the first time he was caught stealing.

Tubby, does your office have video surveillance ? If not, it might be time

yup, all the above posts are just my thoughts of what to do but here's the main dilemma...

A person in his position has over 8 years of training and $5,000 - $10,000 invested in his training. We don't have anyone to replace him and if we let him go, we would loose around $1,000 - $1,500 a day until we can get someone else hired/trained to replace him...

So we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot over $800 worth of books vs. what we gain from him working every day and/or what we'd spend on training....

Sounds like he knows he is not easily replacable. I think it is time to make it atleast seem like he is.

is the cost of his training worth the headache of having to check all of your personal and business records and items each morning to see if he has taken anymore, if it is then keep him, if not fire him no room for people like that no matter what the cost.... it starts small and grows from there and just gets easier for him each time never know what it will be next. I dont know what kind of work you are over but surely he isnt the only person out there that can do what he does.... i would be hiring someone else to take his place...in the long run it could be saving you alot of money

                            imho

Tubby- in my humble-but-most-of-the-time-wrong opinion, he knows that he will be hard to replace. If you aren't going to do anything about it the first time, or the second time, then there WILL be a third, and fourth, and so on, until you DO something about it. Obviously he knows now that he can get away with it and you won't do anything. I say fire him first thing in the morning, no questions asked. The money you miss out on while trying to replace him will eventually come back around to you by having hard working employees on whom you can thoroughly rely. If you can't trust somebody- you don't need 'em, no matter how much they're bringing in. Just my .02.
