Once he returned, I picked up more work for him to do and the job isn't complete yet.

Second, you need to fire whoever gave you that hair cut. If you paid money for it, they stole your money.
    I've got a 99% suspicion it's him.

I gave myself that haircut! I can't fire myself!

Next on your missing books, put an email out about returning the books and tell them to place them on your desk.
Is their any way you can keep them locked up in your desk or have a system where they can ckeck out the books, that way you can track where they are going to.
How many offices do you have in Texas ?
We have 2 offices in Texas. One in Tyler and one here in Teague.

He was off work today for what he said was a "court" date. I didn't know they had court on Friday... I searched his truck, after he gave me the run-around for 3 hours of where he left the keys. He does have a briefcase he carries w/ him in and out of the work truck every day. I'll search it Monday.

Are their any ASNT level 2 Radiographers out there in need of a job?

Count the book as part of his compensation and reduce his salary that much per month turnabout is fair play

        Start training his replacement

What value do these books have to an individual? Is he going to sell them or what?

If sleeping at a Holiday Inn Express once is good enough, I'll email you my resume in just a minute!

Sure wish I knew something about that field, it'd be nice to have a boss who hunts!

I dont know what kind of work you are over but surely he isnt the only person out there that can do what he does.... i would be hiring someone else to take his place...in the long run it could be saving you alot of money

                imho

I'm a CPA and most frauds that I have seen started small. Even something like an employee taking a few dollars out of a till. Had a clerk one time that started stealing small amounts out of a daily deposit nobody at the client's office ever checked. It went on for close to 3 years; she stole something around $150,000 in cash over that period.

Also, not sure what was done when the first offense was noticed on this employee stealing. The employer should have documented the incident and provided the employee at least a written repramand that should be signed and copied into their personnel file. If bad employee behavior is documented, it makes firing them that much easier to do.

Once a thief always a thief. Ever here that term? Well believe it. Sometimes it's can be caused by dire financial problems but most are committed by habitual criminals that just cannot stay honest. Call his hand and try and determine which it is. The guy may need financial help or loan instead of firing. Good luck.

Tell the employees that they are going to have to supply the books for themselves and replace anything else that disappears. This should put an end to it. Other option is to spend a day with a marker or an etcher and have somebody put the company name on everything as a deterrent.

What makes me more mad than the fact of what they cost is the fact that (I'm still assuming it's one person) he took two of them. He can't gain anything from them by selling them as our company name is stamped everywhere on it. He'll take things just to take them.

Last week, he asked for a Mag machine to have on his truck which yes, he does need. (it's for mag particle testing) I told him which one to get, he asked about the other one. I told him no, that was already spoken for. Guess what... he took the one that was spoken for. Why does it matter you ask? Because the one that was spoken for has been taken care of by someone, it's been issued to them w/ serial number etc. He'll do things like this just to see if he can get away with it and then once confronted he'll lie and say that's the one he was issued.

Monday morning will tell the tale...

EVERYTHING we use is stamped, engraved, written on, etc w/ our company name & serial # . Every code book we use is stamped w/ a rubber stamp of our company name all over it... inside and out

Place hidden video cameras around valuable areas and catch them at it. Busted!

In my opinion--This guy is pressing his luck and the drippings are falling on you and your other employees. If he is taking things then he isnt only stealing from you he is stealing from his felow employees, cause your replacement costs are that much out of your profits and the future benefits of them. And another thing why should you have to go through the trouble and cost of putting in a security camera system for this?Because of him? Then its not worth the effort of him.I was taught once that if someone will walk over you, then they will walk on you. And right now you think this guy is walking over you,are you going to wait for him to walk on you,so to speak?
Best of luck and God Bless
