Day or night? Cicada would only be during the day. Katydid would primarily be at night. From your description of the "chirping," I'm thinking Katydids.

          I have the same thing.

It's not the green frogs (they're too loud). It's quieter than crickets and cicadas. Almost sounds like a small high pitched bird but different.

I was wondering the same thing last night when I was out trying to dispatch the green frogs around my pool.

                What is that noise!!!

Yep, freaking gecko. I sat out in the yard for hours until I narrowed down. They chirp like a bird, all night long.

I thought it was a cardinal that had it's days and nights mixed up, then I thought it was a bullbat. But, nope it is the wee little gecko.

I would have never guessed gecko - I have them everywhere. I always thought it was those tree frogs or the crickets.

If you are in the valley, it is probably a Rio Grande Chirping frog. They prefer moist conditions. Their chirp is very loud for a small frog. The frog is maybe 1" long at the most. They can also be in other parts of the state, because they can live in potted plants and be moved easily. I have heard them in Houston and San Antonio.
