I used my small skillet Friday night, and Saturday. Like it so much I got my single griddle out, and made some quesadilla's on Sunday. I say the heck with the glass top, but it did not seem to mess with it too bad, and it heated up pretty evenly.

I warmed-cooled my new skillet a couple more times Friday and Saturday with bacon drippins, yesterday morning it got some actual bacon and eggs......Tasty! Probly some fajitas tonight.

Since the rain washed out most of my outside plans for the weekend, I wore out two wire cups on my little 4" grinder working on my old 12" dutch oven that got rusted. That, and some soapy water and lots of scrubbin, then boiled clean water in it and scrubbed some more. Then the oil down-heat-cool treatment 3 or 4 times......I think she's ready to be put back into commision.

          Dale,

Do you have a link, or some step by step directions on re-doing one, and for seasoning a new skillet. I think I need a new one from Academy, and I do not trust their "pre-seasoned" claim.

Thanks for your input on this, my wife actually wanted me to thank you. I forgot how much better the cast iron cooked.

The new ones can be seasoned with any oil, but lard or bacon grease seem to be the favorites. I started by setting mine on the stove on low heat with a big spoonfull of bacon grease in it, just wait till it's warm and wipe the inside of the skillet down with the grease and a paper towel. Then put it in the oven at about 250 for an hour or so, wiping the sides with the grease from time to time. Then let it cool slowly with the grease in it. I got through 2 or 3 more shorter heat-cool cycles, but that's probably not neccesary.

As far as re-doing one, you'll find a lot of thoughts on that with a quick google search depending on whether yours is rusty, or burned on grease.

Thanks for the tips. I used lard on mine, but just use the oven to heat it up a few times, and then cool down.

I have a big Dutch Oven I may need to re-do or retire it as a planter, and buy a new one.

Don't even think about it without eye protection, jeans, and gloves! Those little wires come out of there and will stick into your skin! There's other wire cups that don't have the wire twisted like the one above.......I don't even know how they are allowed to sell them for grinders......the wires FLY out of those.

The brush did a really good job but the thing still had a red tint to it, that's when I went in with the hot soapy water and stiff brush. I read something about water and vinegar mixed 50/50......I'd have tried that if I'd had any. After the soapy water I boiled two pots of clean water in it and brushed it, to get all the soap out, then started re-seasoning.

I use cups just like those for putting a shine on my welds. I get them from our local welding shop. I may try and make it new again.

Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker. It is amazing. Maintains a perfect temerature without messing with it.

My WSM I mentioned above, and home brew. I actually have to put home brew above it all.
