we have what is "supposedly" one of the best snakepits in our area on the place we hunt on, BUT you won't catch me anywhere near it! It is a huge crater in the ground with thousands of HUGE rocks stacked on top of eachother. A guy here in Graham claims that he hunted snakes for years and they caught more snakes out of that one pit in 1 hr than he had ever caught in a days time. We have been thinking about finding someone to get in there and catch as many as they can, but are hesitant for liability reasons. We don't want em'

The only good rattlesnake is a dead one, tastes like chicken.

I built my own extension for my sprayer and if you do, make sure that you use a sprayer with a aluminum nozzle. It works better when you use the compression fitting to attach the copper tubing. I have tongs and the only drawback to those are if the snakes are in a hole, sometimes it is hard or impossible to get the jaws around the snake. I have a hook as well and it works for pinning them to pick them up and dragging them out. Unless of course they are hooking themselves in a crack and then it is nearly impossible to get them out. Usually when I go, they are already out of the dens, so I have to look under boards and such to find them. Good luck, and a snakebite kit with a razor and extractor is your first step to becoming an amputee. Much better to get to the ER and don't waste time with the kit.

          snake hunting

In the past I have always hunted rattle snakes for rattle snake round ups or snake shows. When we head out we wear legerns everybody carries 5 gallon buckets with lids that have holes drilled in them for air. We normally hit the same holes every year. We do indeed use gas to try to get the snakes out but you must not pump too much gas because it will do nothing more than kill them. We have a permit to sell the snakes by the pound but they must be alive. We use a mirror to reflect light into the holes in order to see. When snakes do come out of the holes they will appear slow and sluggish most of the time due to the gas fumes, after getting some fresh air they will lively up so be careful. We also use snake clamps and snake hooks. We run the gas down the hole with a water hose and then put our ears on the hose and listen if there are any snakes inside you will hear them moving through the hose.
