    Rattlesnake round-up techniques?

Trying to research different techniques on catching rattlers. Never really went out with the sole purpose of catching as many as I could, but will be headed to my Brownwood lease in 2 weeks with some friends to see who can catch the most.

Most of what I've heard consists of taking a sprayer bottle (like a weed killer spray canister) and filling it with gas and spraying cracks, holes, crevasses, etc. Snakes (if they’re there) just come crawling out asking to be caught? Is it that easy? Any other advice/tips/tricks?

They don't always crawl out of the cracks and holes, but you'll definitely get them moving around. Sometimes you just see them crawling out of one crack into another one. Get one of those long grabber things to catch them with. They work great. I made a snare pole one time, and we caught a couple of snakes with that. But it only works if you can get a loop around the snake's head or tail. The grabbers can just grab any part of the snake.

    BE CAREFUL!

You need a long piece of copper tubing to slide as far in as possible, before spraying.

Copper tubing? Like an extension for your sprayer?

                Is gassing illegal?
I wouldn't think it was any more of an EPA "no no" as what many do with diesel corn for hogs.

If you can use propane, it will not affect the den. They will come back to it. Regular gas will kill the den.

Look for dens facing mostly west and about 20 ft of copper tubing to extend the sprayer and gas won't Kill a den....been hunting the same dens for years. Good luck and you should carry a good extractor kit and know how to use it.

I use a pump up garden sprayer with the inside tube removed with about a half gallon of gasoline. That way when I spray, all that goes in the den is vapors and not raw gasoline. If the raw gasoline gets on the snakes it will bleach the hide and nobody will buy them. Get a pair of snake tongs and a hook is a good idea. I also use a plastic trash can to put them in until I get them home. Wear tall boots and stay alert.

Why would anyone go looking for trouble like that.

Then again, that is what my wife said when I told her about my plans to go after Coastal Grizzlies with my bow in a few years.

Get the tubing in behind the snake, if possible. And watch very carefully, as they will come out of every nook and cranny. Also use a good light and look in the hole, just grab any that are close! If you got sun, use a small mirror to reflect light into the hole. Oh yeah, know the quickest route to the hospital .
