As for the alcohol, I've used it on my bows on several occassions and it has never damaged the finish.

I would suggest simple chalk... Works for a weight bar and should be perfect for your application... If your grip is centered in the palm of your hand it shouldn't slip... Good luck! What an awesome time to be preparing for Africa... Hope you have a great hunt...
