    Rest vs Off the shelf

I've currently been shooting a cheap NAP style stick on plastic rest on my Samick Spirit II recurve. The arrow stays on the rest nicely but it seems to wear my feathers pretty quickly. With this bow would you recommend trying to find a better rest or should I shoot it off the shelf? Also, for you guys that shoot off the shelf what material do you use to silence the shelf? I've seen both the bear hair and seal skin rests but don't know how they perform. Thanks for the info.

I prefer to shoot off the shelf. A rest is just one more thing that can go wrong.

I use the softer side of Velcro on the shelf and the side of the sight window. It's quiet and lasts a long time.

I like to shoot off the shelf. Some bows are more shelf friendly than others. Brandon told me he was having trouble getting good flight from the shelf on his Samick...so I don't know.

Anything soft and quiet will work on the shelf. I like the stiff hair type, but have used a thick mole skin type material as well. You can build up a little rest with a match stick or something similar under the material if you can't get the flight you are looking for off the shelf.

        I do the same thing.

I also shoot of the shelf. I like the arrow closer to my hand and there is less wear and tear on my feathers than with an elevated rest.

Off the shelf for me, too, and I usually use seal skin. It's durable and very quiet. I had a Samick once and shot it off the shelf. It shot just fine like that.

Like Mark said, my brother was having trouble with arrow flight with his Samick off the shelf. Since then I have gotten a Samick as well that is set up to shoot off the shelf so we may try to re-work his.

We would both prefer shooting off the shelf if we can.

On some stick on rests I actually trimmed them done a little. You can cover it with some moleskin and that will quieten it and also soften the rough edges.

I do like MEB cept I use a bear weather rest on my recurves. I trim the bottom so it sits a bit lower then cover the whole thing with moleskin.Works great.

I have a pad on the shelf (thin foam) covered in moleskin. Soft velcro on the riser with a piece of toothpick in the center to build it out closer to center shot. Still experimenting but this is working good so far.

Earl Bateman makes a good rest

                      Price $12.04
                      Cat. No. CR

                      Hunter Cover Rests
                      Calf Hair & Fleece Kit
                      The Silent Rest
                      Adhesive Back
                      Specify R or L

Hoyt Pro Rest and Flippers have also worked well for me. I cover them all with moleskin except the Bateman Cover Rest as it comes that way already.

I traveled 1500 miles to hunt big pronghorns. When what could have been a world record walks into range, I go to nock one up and look down, no rest. I tried anyway but it didn't work. I learned to shoot off the shelf and have from then on.

Yeah Chew, me too. I tried the shot off the bare shelf and nocking the arrow lower on the string but the arrow came out wobbly and missed him by a mile.
