It could have been any one of the three. The three being coyote, bobcat, or cougar.

I've seen all three chasing deer. Full grown mature deer.

The predators that were closest to catching the deer were the coyotes.

Pretty sure a big cat will ambush (ie pounce on something) rather than chase it down

Well, there is no way to know of course, the cool guess would be lion...but there are so many more coyotes that the smart money is bet there.

Had a similar case opening weekend. Two does come running from behind me and stop about ten yards from me for a second, then off the go. The way they were looking back made me start looking too. Sure enough a big red yote came from the same direction and just stopped and turned back and off he went. I thought wolf for sure but don't think there are any in Texas. As I have said before I am a rookie to hunting so who knows. It was big and red, pretty hide to put on the wall if I ever see him again.

not sure when I'll get to go back to the lease but I borrowed a call from a friend and hope to kill at least 3-5 yotes.
