First year with my Black Widow PCH (picture heavy)

Opening weekend can't get here any sooner!!! All the recent threads about bows, and first year hunting trad has led me to go back and revisit some of my old threads.

It is hard to believe that I have only had my widow for a year. It is so perfect that I feel like I have had it the whole time. But just a year ago, it was delivered to my house

I think I went home early that day... because I don't recall the kiddos being home as I carefully opened the box and pulled out and admired the bow.

I chose to put a Bible verse instead of my name on the bow. Genesis 27:3 reads "Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison."

I knew after the first time In shot a PCH, that it was going to be a hunter. It carries with it a reputation and the bow begs to be hunted with.

In an short 2 weeks I was ready for opening weekend where I made it a place hang.

I couldn't stop admiring it while sitting in the blind on its first hunt.

I finally flung an arrow at an animal a few weeks later... but only a non fatal high shot to the back of a doe

After over a month and 11 sits... I finally connected on my first deer with a trad bow and first blood for the widow.

Besides hunts with my son and his rifle, I carried the bow with me all season long.

WT season came to a close and although I only killed one deer, It was the best season ever! (My son shot his first deer so we had alot to be thankful for!)

In February, I joined the crowd up at Buff's and killed a ram the first night.

It was cold and rainy at times... but that's no excuse to not hunt when you got a widow.

Then it was time for the annual trek to South Texas where I had redemption on mind. All sorts of critters would die, and for the first time, I was feeling pretty confident and started having fun.

Snake, rabbits, and hares (no pic) were all in danger because of this bow. If it were not for the Javis... many rabbits would have died for the sake of the stew pot and the enjoyment that hunting with this bow brings.

I got a Javi... and it just started clicking. It was on this trip that I realized that I was a trad hunter.

May came around and so did Turkey season. Jeff had invited me up to help me get a turkey with a bow. I had never been turkey hunting and the weather was iffy and the birds might not even show... but I was certain that regardless, it was going to be a good time. We could bowfish if it was a bust.

As luck would have it. On one of our sits we saw some birds. I missed my first, but got a 2nd chance and sealed the deal on a nice Tom.

At this point, I had killed 5 of the 6 Texas critters on my list with a trad bow. A hog (previously with the sage), a deer, a javi, rabbit, and a turkey. The only thing left was them pesky squirrels. I have missed so many times... and that weekend was no exception until I finally connected on our last sit.

    All 6 in the books!

I also got to bowfish, but didn't use the widow for that .

The summer was a bust as far as hunting. It gets so dang hot that I tend to switch to fly fishing for a few months. But the widow stays strung and I shoot with it 3 or 4 times a week.

Now its a year old. I'd like to get a hog with it and a few does this fall.. or maybe get lucky and get inside bow range on an axis. I need to get into better shape and serious about an elk hunt. I know this bow wants a pic taken with it laying it across an elk.

That's awesome!! Beautiful bow and lots of good hunt. Did you eat that ram? And if so how do they taste? I've heard they're not good, and then heard from other folks they are.I haven't ruled out shooting one but I'd like to be able to eat it if I do!!

Terrific write up, and congrats on the successful transition and may trad harvests. I have unsuccessfully tried to make the transition and just haven't been able to yet!

You can make anything taste good if you smoke it until it's tender!
