    Armguards

I was buying some items to get me to finally shooting my bow, and was wondering how bad I actually need an armguard. I never used one when I used to have a compound bow, and got slapped every now and then, but it just reenforced my keep-arm-away-from-string feelings.
I'm just curious because I can't find a decent leather shop any where near me (college station) and I don't want to shell out $20 for a piece of equipment that doesn't get used.

It all depends on how you grip the bow. I never use an armguard and the few times the string does hit my arm it just brushes against it real close to my wrist. I do own a couple armguards, but never use them except when I have on long sleeves to hunt. I know guys who can't take one shot without bruising the heck out of their arms and so they wear an armguard all the time. You will just have to experiment and see.

If you high five the grip rather than shake it's hand... then odds are you will not need an arm guard. I do not shoot with one. I also lock my elbow which puts it closer to the string.

My wife however has a double jointed elbow so her forearm sticks out regardless.

I use an armguard when shooting my longbows, but not always when shooting a recurve.

Like Bisch I only use one when hunting with long slightly bulky sleeves.

I have a really pretty one I bought from Jeff Massie years ago. I never wear it.

Never unless I have heavy sleeves on.

Same here. One less thing to wrap my little brain around and keep up with. I have a scar or two in the learning process though. Arvin

I used to always wear one but I don't even own one now. When I move back to Washington and the cold I'll probably get one to tame sweatshirt sleeves.

I wear one whether I need it or not.
I seldom hit my arm, but the occasional pain justifies it. also
                      need it with long sleeves.

I think I may brave the scars for now... I may regret this, but I'm going to skip the arm guard till fall and long sleeves...

I wear one every time i shoot. Rarely ever hit it or even brush against it anymore but if it happens I like knowing it's not gonna make me yell profanity lol

Just start shooting, and if you are hitting your arm, then go buy an armguard!

i never use armguards, even when i ware a bulky jacket in wintertime. i just cant stand the feeling of an armguard.. and after hitting my arm a few times in the beginning i my form started to change an now i nearly never hit it anymore..
