The trad guys I've seen shooting vanes use an elevated rest of some kind.

Yes. It's all about the tuning

Sorry to dispute you, but you can shoot just about any fletching you want to use as long as you tune for clearance.

Any properly tuned arrow to bow combo will have complete fletch clearance during pass. An elevated rest just makes it easier to accomplish.
Bows with very narrow shelves are pretty easy to get it done.
Bows that have wide shelves may need a raised area under the shelf material, but it normally don't take more than about 1/4"

I shoot vanes off the shelf exclusively.
Some of my bows have a fairly elaborate shelf modification.
Some of them have no modification.

Cock vane in at 3 O'clock will usually get you the best clearance, but it may be unnecessary.

Got a picture of your shelf?
Need one looking at it straight on from the front or rear.

I use the cock vane as one point of my anchor, so I shoot cock vane out at 9 O'clock

I've been shooting some vaned arrows off the shelf because I'm too lazy to strip them and replace them with feathers at the moment. My tuning abilities aren't the greatest, so I've only been able to minimize the up-and-down porpoising a bit by playing with the nock height. Aside from the porpoising, they shoot OK. I'm going to try Rick's suggesion of shooting with the cock vane in next time.

I've shot 2" razors an now chop my own 2" shields. They fly great but require the time to get your arrow right. The more fletch you have , the more you can get away with as far as tuning goes.
