    First Traditional Bow

I am in the market for my first traditional bow. I have been reading through some posts around TBH, and through some other internet sites, and I think I have a good idea of what I need. I know some of you will suggest that I go visit a shop and talk to someone, which I plan to do, but I like to plan too much for my own good sometimes.

I am a bigger dude, about 6'3" tall with a wingspan of 80.25". Calculations I have found say my draw length is about 32".

Based on this, it looks like I should get a larger bow, probably with a height of at least 66". Draw weight I was thinking about 40# due to most of the weight systems being around 28-29", and that putting the weight of the bow closer to 46-48# at my draw length.

My initial thought is a take down recurve for the simple purpose that when I feel I am ready to increase the draw weight of my bow, I will have the option of getting new limbs for my riser instead of buying a new bow (money will dictate this decision most likely). If it does not work this way, please let me know.

Now I would like to ask the green screen for any input on what I have said and suggestions for a bow. Ideally, I would like to get a bow and everything I need to go shoot for under $200 (probably asking a lot) but might be able to go up to $300. I am not opposed to buying used, but most bows I have seen used are around the 60" length.

Thanks in advance for any help. I will appreciate it.

I think your on the right track. I'm a long draw myself, 33 with wheel bow but 31 with trad bows and my are 62in. Just be carefull with off the shelf bows, they (most of them) stack weight bad past 29-30in. Best thing is find some trad folks in your area that will let you shoot there bows. Good luck with your search

Thanks Lefty. I'll keep that in consideration.

My compound is a 31" draw. With my first trad bow I may have been pulling 28. 44lbs at 28 was all I wanted. After 6 months I may be pulling 29 and I am shooting a 55 lb bow. I would do as someone suggested up top and try to find someone close that you can shoot with. You will not draw as far as you think you will or anywhere close IMO.

The Samick Sage has been a fantastic starter platform and has served many well. Samick just released a 64" version of the Sage called the Journey. I have shot this bow and it does not disappoint. I'm sure it would be a great starter bow, especially for long draws. The best thing about it is that it's still the same price as the Sage ($129.99). Worth looking into for sure.

Moe had several bows in the classifieds that were all 66" that would be perfect for you.

Thanks for the heads up! I went and looked at them and they are all heavier (around 60-65#). I'll be in the market for one of these at some point, but I don't think just yet.

I think all of Moe's bows were quite a bit heavier that you are looking for to start.

Excellent choice! The Sage has a proven track record but stacks past 28", the longer limbs on the Journey should fit you nicely!

You can't go wrong with the Samick. Great bows for the money. I've recommended them to several friends.
