Thanks for the explanation, Jeffro. So they're more D-shaped with no reflex/deflex and less of a pistol grip. Would like to try to shoot one one of these days to see if I like them.

How Many Shoot a HILL Style Longbow?

I have an old martin ML14 ( Hill style) and it will cause your back teeth to
swap holes, but after shooting it a while you don't seem to notice it much.
I shot it a lot last year because it is the lowest weight I had at the time
and I was having shoulder problems. I finally got the weight down to
46lbs on the bow I was building and started shooting it. But I've been
thinking about building a form and trying to make a Hill style bow.

If the fistmele is correct and you shoot a heavy arrow - you may notice some but, not near as much as some would lead you to believe. I have shot them for well over 35 years and I can still shoot the best with them. I do prefer a string follow (not set) longbow as it does soften the shock even more.
For some peoples edification: String follow is built in to the bow itself. The limbs come back some toward the shooter. Set is when the bow has been strung and it takes on a set ( curve) from the bow being strung itself. Most longbows take on some set but, with the use of glass in the bows they return quickly to previous when unstrung. A slefbow or all wood laminate will retain some of this set.

Just shot my " Big Five " for the first time , shot it about an hour. That thing cant hit nothing , the handshock oh my.Not sure if I would even use as fire wood , dont know how some folks even call it a bow. With that said if anyone has any HH longbows for sale let me know , I know you shouldent want more than a few dollars for one of these 2x4 bows , just send me a PM I have cash in hand.Only reason I am doing this is to save everyone from these evil bows ( 66" - 70" any weight up to 80# ) SAVE YOURSELF and sell me that MONSTER so you dont get hurt!!!!!!

Tell you what I havent shot one in many years and never owned one but this old "Big Five"
will flat shoot.Like I said it is 60# @30" 70" long , I draw a full 30" and shoot a 700gr arrow. Dont think I dropped one shot in an hour of shooting.I like how it feels in the hand and super Quiet , with the old backquiver full of arrows it just feels right.I dont notice shock just a solid thud , Im sure after a little tinkering and get me a good set of heavy woods it will get even better.Guess I like doing it the way the oldtime guys did it kinda puts you in their shoes for a while.Put on the old plaid wool and have some fun..
