    Hogs and penetration

I've been getting a bit frustrated lately when it comes to these hogs. Over the past 2 weeks I shot 4 hogs, 3 in the 200-250lb range and one 150lbs or so. 2 of the bigger pigs were basic rib shots behind the shoulder which I ended up tracking for several hundred yards before they left our property. Pretty annoying when you spend that much time tracking on your hands and knees thru plum thickets and such and you dont find the animal. The other was right in the arm pit, just a good low heart shot. With dismay, I watched that pig cross the county line, literally. I'm just not getting the penetration to the other side of the rib cage. Basically I feel like I'm just getting 1 lung in most cases, and a pig can go along ways on one lung. I've shot more pigs than I can count with a compound and unless I just made a bad shot they were usually down in short order. Didn't always have pass thrus, but I was usually poking out the other side. Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting that with my Longbow. I'm shooting 52lb@28, my actual draw length is 27 1/2". So maybe 50lbs??? Haven't actually put it on a scall to see. My arrows are 560grs with alot of FOC. They are 3555 Goldtips with 100gr brass inserts and 200gr Simmons Landsharks with the broadhead adapters installed. Whitetails are not a problem, Does are pass thrus and when I've shot bucks the arrow is usually just hanging out the other side. Here's my thinking, I need to go to a smaller broadhead for these hogs, but I need to maintain that 200grs too. How can I take a standard 100gr broadhead and add 100grs to it? Or is there a small broadhead out there that I can use steel broadhead adapters on and get 200grs out of it? If I can just reach the other side of that rib cage I think I can drop these pigs in short order. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for reading,
    Matt

They do make a 190gr Phathead 2 blade version with a 1" cutting diameter. Thats bascially what I'm looking for, or close enough anyway. $45 for 3 is a bit hard to swallow for pigs though. I know, I didn't state a price, and you provided a valid option. Anything cheaper out there? Or is there a brass adapter out there that can screw into the insert and then you can screw a 100gr or 125gr broadhead into it?

      Thanks!

Change BH. The landsharks probably cut too wide especially if trying to go thru the shield. I like em but not for hogs.
I use Zephyr Sasquatch's and Sirocco's for pigs and they get thru penetration and will split ribs in half. I am about 48lb pull at my draw length.
Zwickey BH's are good too as are any that are about 1.5 times longer than wide.

            Oh, and Magnus stingers too

No Problem. Lancaster Archery carries them. They're the Goldtip Traditional Hunters.

Thanks guys, I'm checking all these BH's out now.

Matt, they make a steel glue on insert that is 100grns. and one that is 75grns. Stick a 100 or 125 glue on head on one and your in the ball park.

That was my thoughts, but I haven't seen a 100gr or 125gr BH that use glue on adapters. ???

If this continue with different B.H. all I can think for you to try next is to try go for its neck, a bit lower from its top neck and it should give u an exit wound easily. You should disable it right there and then easily cause of the spine. Something to think about next time you're out there since you're using the Longbow, not the compound.

Check out the Y.T. on one of the thread on Hog's anatomy. Not many people know that hog's spine from its back to the neck is almost a 90 degree bent downward from its back. Once you know where the spine on the neck, it's almost a guarantee smackdown dirt nap when using bow.

                            Good luck, brotha!

Stos or Black Diamond for the broad head. A single bevel would give you a little more penetration as well.

Also I would reccommend you looking into string trackers. I will not hunt hogs or turkeys with out one. I've used them for as long as they have been made with very few problems. They have saved me countless animals by using them. If you want to know how to put them on a long bow just say so and I will post pictures. It's easy to make.
