    Arrow tuning ???

Ok guys i have a question..

Right now i am shooting 5575 gold tips with 50 gr insert and 240 gr tip.. They are flying really well and tuned great.. THe problem is i am not getting the penetration that i want..

I am wanting to add another 50 gr up front but when i do it makes my spine to weak. Can i cut a half inch to an inch off of my arrow and stiffen the spine up enough to add 50 more grains??? Or am i going to have to try another arrow like a Axis FMJ or something??

    ps shot another pig

176 fps or so. Im shooting my blueridge at about 52-53# at my draw . I dont care if it slows down a little i just want a little extra thump with the 50 extra grains

You should be able to do that as long as you have the extra length on your arrow now. I would only cut 1/4" at a time though. Carbon arows can be very finicky.

What's your total arrow weight currently? Those Simmons are pretty wide (awesome heads)..are you sure they're super sharp?

If youre killing what you're shooting I wouldn't mess with it....but it is fun to tinker. Keep us up to
          date on your results

Well I bought some 340 fmj's to tinker with. I'm gonna leave them full length and put a 100 gr insert plus my 190 gr field point. So 290 up front. My gold tips were like 520 grains. And these fmj's will get me over 600

Sounds like that would put a wallop on something. Take pics if u do any testing.

looks like a dead animal so you have enuff penetration

Not sure you have enough horse power for FMJs in 340. The are stiff!! There are alot of variables to consider, such as distance of shots, what type of animals, speed, broadhead, etc. Most of it is trial and error.

I don't shoot any farther than 13 yards. So all I'm going for is the penetration.
I just need them to fly pretty good to shoot through netting. I want to poke through both sides and I'm not coming close to that right now.

JT... it should tune at about 31" with that 100 grain insert but I'd start full length..

You don't need them to fly good to shoot thru the netting. You need them to fly great to get the penetration you are after. If I had to guess I would say that the number one reason for lack of/loss of penetration is arrows that are not tuned as they should be. All other things being equal, the better tuned the arrow is, the better the penetration will be.

Have you thought about using those weight tubes Three Rivers sells? They come in 3, 5 and 8 GPI - You could add weight real quick. I've been meaning to ask - does anyone have experience - good or bad - using weight tubes? I've heard one problem is they can slide around inside the shaft and pop your nocks off on impact, but there's a video on 3 rivers that says if you crimp them they fit tight.

I used them for a while and after losing a bunch of nocks gave up on them. I like having the weight on the front end better and do not have to worry about losing the nocks now.

BTW, I have about 3 dozen weight tubes I would make you a good deal on if you are interested?

I cant believe Im going to say this but BISCH IS RIGHT, man that tasted bad. Arrow flight and tuning is most important when talking penetration
