How can I improve my release?

Yesterday Bisch was kind enough to help me get my arrows tuned in and we discovered that I'm doing something funny with my release causing the arrows to fishtail to the left (I can see the fletchings flying to the left of the point). Today I've been trying to tighten my back muscles and relax my hand but now I'm pulling the bow to the left once I release. I believe the arrows are flying straighter but it doesn't seem right that I'm moving the bow on release. Plus hitting my arm more.

Any thoughts on how to improved all this?

I prescribe to the Asbell method. Instead of working on the release hand with pulling around and such you instead push with the bow hand. By really pushing with the bow hand straight at the target the string hand will have to pull straight back and release cleanly and away. If I start haveing a problem as you describe the push will always imporve it. Its the push pull method. If you push you must pull there is no way to do it otherwise. Now I am not talking about a push pull draw I am talking about at full draw you really push with the bow hand.

have someone put a tennis ball between your shoulder blades and you squeeze and hold it there while shooting a lighter weight bow. This helps with better form and follow through as Stated above "Push and Pull"

Also borrow or buy a lighterweight bow and concentrate when shooting to never let your release hand and ring finger leave the corner of your mouth. That will get the arrow flying Straight to the target.

      Hope this helps

work on it on a blank bale in the dark or with your eyes closed. You will be amazed at how much more easily the bow draws you can hold it and feel everything you are doing. I do this almost everytime I shoot just to feel it and stay on top of the game.

Thanks Mike! I believe I got a pretty close arrow match for his bow but I am no coach and find it very difficult to pick apart people's form.

Javi probably already mentioned this, but you seem to be flicking your wrist on your string hand on release. You seem to be thinking over your release (second guessing yourself) instead of letting it come naturaly. The last thing I noiticed is how deep you hook your string, it almost looks like it is resting on your middle knuckle.

I always try to keep my hand in place on release, very little movement and only straight back. Let the release flow, let it catch you be surprise, just like shooting a gun. Just pick your spot and relaxe, the string will slip from your fingers at the right time if you are thinking of only of the spot you want to hit. I also use a very shallow grip on my string, not even on my first knuckle. I feel it gives ME a smoother release, however it is very tireing and dificult to find the "spot" on your finger tips.

I am no expert by any means and Javi is also known as our resident coach, so if what I said contradicts anything he suggested, heed his advice before even thinking about mine.
Good luck and, most importantly, Have Fun
