He's not a new shooter anymore, this thread is over 5 years old.

Good advice. Bear Montanas used to be the best bargain in longbows. That's until everyone figured out they were pretty good bows. I remember them selling new for $175. Now they are 2x that.

But I still recommend them for folks who want a more traditional longbow.

And yea, every bow "likes" heavy arrows. If I had a buck for every time I've heard that...

5 years? Folks have been re-hasing these HH longbow threads a lot longer than that. LOL. Probably L'wall vintage '98 or so, I'd guess.

              LOL. I know that's right.
I've become one of the hashers now because I recently acquired a Howard Hill bow. It's definitely a different feel than a recurve but I love the overall lightness of weight. After shooting my Hill it makes my recurve seem heavy and bulky.

You realize there are a lot of one-piece longbows that don't have hand-shock and are as light as any Hill longbow, right? My Tomahawk is a perfect example of this.

                  Yeah I know.
I've always wanted a Howard Hill bow and now I have one. I like the look of the bow!
Sometimes you just gotta get what you want even if it doesn't make sense to others.
I guess I'm stubborn and a glutton for punishment. LOL

That's exactly how I grip my R/D Tomahawk one piece longbow. It's a good way to grip any straight-handled longbow. Hill or otherwise.

LW, no offense but you seem to have a stronger-than-average opinion against Howard Hill bows, or maybe Craig Ekin bows in general (?). That seems odd for someone who purchased three different Hills. Did something happen between the first and the third that upset you or caused shooting difficulties? Also, do you shoot them like an Olympic recurve or more in the Hill shooting style? If the former then maybe that's why you can't get them to shoot well for you. Some bows just aren't a good fit for some folks. Not the bow's fault, though.

BTW, you asked why I own a 21st Century Edge if I already like Hills. I have different bows that I use for different needs and I enjoy all of them. Don't you?

Nothing wrong with the Hill bows. They're just made more like the true old American longbow. I shot that style of bow for several years and enjoyed shooting them. After you shoot one for awhile you won't notice the hand shock so much until you shoot a bow with out hand shock. This style of bow is why everyone use to say there was such a difference between a long bows and a recurves. The Hill style longbows will handle heavy better than todays crossbreed longbows and recurves.
I shoot self bows, Hill style bows, crossbreed longbows and recurves and enjoy all of them.

Different stokes for different folks. (Ford & Chevy)

That's how you're reading it. I love Hill bows. Wish they weren't so shocky, or that's all I'd shoot. And I mean that.

Do I shoot them like an Oly. recurve? LOL. Sorry, but that makes me laugh a bit. I was shooting Hill style longbows LONG before I ever even saw my first Olympic bow. So yea, no.

As for the "true American" longbow, Hill bows are more English longbow than American flatbow. I'd say the Massie Longhorn was probably as close to a true "American" longbow as anything ever made. But of course, that's just my opinion and I don't expect everyone to agree with it.

Massie Longhorns are GREAT! I have 3.
