    44 Special question

May be acquiring a 44 special ruger bolt action rifle suppressed. I currently don’t hand load. My issue is finding heavy cast bullets in 44S that are subsonic. I see where I can buy 44M subsonic. I know in pistols I can shoot 44S in a 44M. I’m guessing the little xtra length would make it a negative in a bolt gun to shoot 44Mag. Trying to get ideas before I commit

Just curious as to what you're planning on using this on and at what range.

I’m curious as to what rifle is chambered in .44 Special. I’ve never seen or heard of one. I know Ruger chambered the Model 77 for .44 Mag. I have quite a bit of .44 Special ammo if you need some. I sold my revolver and don’t need it.

Bet it's chambered 44 mag but seller uses it with 44 special.

2nd guess is 44 special is already subsonic out of it.

your going to have a very hard time finding heavy 44 special loads from anywhere,,,, not being mean about it but your either going to have to start hand loading or find a buddy that will do it for you,,, also its very hard to find a bullet heavier than 300 grains for the 44,,,,, and even those are very rare right now, the rifle is also most likely a 44 magnum not a special but will fire the special with no problem

            44 Special question

Sounds like an interesting rifle for sure- a bolt gun shooting a pistol round, interesting.

I would think a .44 special would durn near be subsonic right out the gate.

            In for replies....

If it is integrally suppressed. It was probably built by John Tibbits of John’s Guns. Should be chambered for .44 magnum. A friend of mine had one. Factory. .44 specials are loaded pretty weak due to the old guns chambered in that round. They will be hard to come by with the current ammo situation. Time to learn to reload.

If you don’t reload, you’ll go broke or just won’t shoot.

On cast bullets why go any heavier than the 250-ish Keith bullets?

If you plan on shooting 44 special with any regularity plan on getting setup to reload. Factory ammo will be weak and expensive unless you go with a boutique manufacturer, which will still be pricey.

If you do end up loading ammo, you might as well go with 44 mag and a 240/250 gr bullet at 1k fps.

Subsonic is going to be anemic whether is loaded in a 44mag case or 44spc. Case.

I had one back when I had my farm. Any 44 special ammo will be sub sonic. I always thought it was a good ideal to stay with jacketed bullets as there is no way to clean the lead out of the suppressor.

I handloaded mine down to 1,000 fps in 44 mag brass with a 280 grain swift A frame bullet and finished off a ton of critters with it through the years. The sound of the bullet hitting a Red deer was louder than the gun going off

I sure as hell wouldn’t get to hit with one. 300 grains at 1000 fps will do some damage.

Me either. My point was it doesn't matter what Case it's loaded in.

It is from Johns Guns. I’ll call and see if it’s in 44 M. It is a Ruger 77. And I’ve shot pigs with it in the past and don’t remember a problem with getting them laying down. Thanks for the info
