    Trigger Pull Weight

I have a Ruger American in 308 that is my primary gun to hunt with. I’m looking at adding a Timney Trigger to it but I’m curious…what is a good pull weight to use for a deer rifle? I don’t want it to be so light that it might go off when dropped but I want to be a little more accurate with a lighter pull weight. I was thinking 2.5lbs. Thoughts?

I usually stick with 3lbs personally, but 2.5 isn't out of the question. Honestly either will plenty accurate for hunting.

As long as it’s crisp three pounds is about perfect IMO.

I wouldn’t want it any less than 2.5 lbs myself.

I like 2 lbs and have all my bolt actions set as close to that as possible.

            Smooth, crisp 3 lbs.

That a good weight but a lot depends on what your used to, your safety discipline, and intended use. I wouldn't want as light a trigger on a stalking rifle as I would a stand rifle. Most of my hunting rifles are around 2 lbs with my wheat field rifle at 12 oz. My lowest is 2oz but that's strictly a target gun and you better keep your finger away from the trigger until you're ready to shoot.

My rifles are set at 1 lb. A properly tuned trigger will not go off unless pulled.

Gotta have good trigger disciple and control on light ones but they sure are a dream to shoot.

2-3 is a great middle of the road IMO. But a crisp 3 is better than a traveling 2

This is all great input…thanks! I think I’ll start with 2.5lbs and see what that feels like.

All of you know your trigger pull weight on triggers adjusted after they come from the factory - do you all have trigger pull gauges? Or is someone else tuning these for you? I ask this stupid question because I've never known what my trigger pull weight is, and I was wondering if it was more common practice than I thought to own a trigger pull scale.

I have a trigger pull gauge. All of my rifles with factory triggers have been modified and tuned by myself so a gauge is a must. The rest are Timneys, Shilens, or factory high end such as Anschutz which only need a screw adjustment.

When I was really into rifles I had a gauge. It was a nice tool to have
