    280AI questions

Really wanting a custom rifle. Been reading about the 280 AI round. My grandad had one and I’d kinda like to have one for that reason and I like different rounds. I’d like to shoot heavier bullets like in the 160-170 range. Also been looking at Fierce Firearms package deals they have. Does anybody have experience with them?

    Thanks

I don’t have experience with fierce firearms but I have experience with the 280ai and it’s one of my favorite deer cartridges. I found the node super easy and my rifle is stupid accurate. Shot tons of pigs with it out to 600yds with it effortlessly. If someone told me bring one rifle we’re going deer hunting and possibly take 500yd shots at pigs for fun I’d take the 280ai. It was built by WTO.

I just picked up a 280AI from Alamo Precision. Haven’t fired a shot out of it yet. But the idea behind the build was shooting heavy bullets. Hopefully it performs as expected.

Artos (member on here) owns and loves the 280AI and will probably be by shortly to provide some insight into the round.

We do a cow elk hunt every January. Was wanting up load it with the heavier bullets thinking it would be enough for cow elk out to 300 yards?
            Thoughts on elk?

Plenty of elk are killed with lesser rounds, the .280 AI will be fine.

I shot my cow elk @ 200 +/- yards with a 280 AI with 140 grain accubonds, it is more than capable of cleanly taking large game.

                  It's hell on deer too.

I've been shooting one since the mid 90's & it should serve your needs well...I'm sure things could have changed since all that time, but think most are still built with 1/9 twist & handle a variety of weights.

I've never shot any bullets heavier than 140 & currently shoot 120gr barnes for our little whitetails.

If you plan to reload N165 is must try powder...I also use 210M primers.

A better choice than 7mm Magnum and a lot less recoil without giving up enough velocity that would make any difference out to 500 yds. I have never cared for belted cases anyway

My APR 25" barrel 9 twist shoots 168 bergers really well. The N165 powder was a game changer. It shot other powders good but this stuff was like a switch went off snd made it shoot stupid good.

I currently load mine with 162 grain eldx with 7828ssc. I get submoa and have had pretty good luck with it.

I have read where RL22 is a really good powder for 280AI but I can't seem to get my hand on any.

Have you tried either of these powders to compare to N165?
