    Thoughts on elk?

    It's absolutely good elk medicine.

I have a 21 inch 7 SAUM which is very similar to the 280AI regarding case capacity. I'm running 180 Berger Hybrids at 2840 and would hesitate to hunt elk with it.

The 280AI will run very similar numbers and perform well with a variety of powders. I'm running H1k and 210M's in mine.

I have read where RL22 is a really good powder for 280AI but I can't seem to get my hand on any.

Have you tried either of these powders to compare to N165?
Actually had Re22 on hand when i started with the 280 AI. It shot good but not what i expected from custom rifle. Found the 165 and some 4831 SC and both were superb in my rifle with the N165 being better in my gun

I run 150ablr a little under 1/2” 3shot groups at 100yds. I’ve had great luck with h4831sc pushing them 3100 26” proof barrel. Nosler brass and fed210m also

My 280AI is an Alamo Precision rifle aslo. I'll order some N165 from the above link. What load/bullet combo are you running?

Can't remember exact powder charge but it's 168 berger classic hunter and CCI match primer

We have 3 APR's in 280AI. We started with 150 ABLR but I did not like the bullet performance. We now shoot 140g Accubond and it would be my first choice to take on an Elk hunt unless I expected shot past 500 yards.

And yes, N165 is a game changer for this round!

How fast was the 150ablr in your rifles? Did you happen to try any 140 Barnes tsx? They also are great.

Why 280ai vs 7 mag. Less recoil?

Generally about 3-4 ft lbs less depending on powder and bullet weights to obtain equal velocities. Doesn't sound like much but can definitely be felt.
Probably like the difference between shooting a .308 vs 30-06 from the same platform.

Are you able to keep the scope on the target with the recoil? That’s impossible with my Tikka 7mm.

Not without a good muzzle break or suppressor.

                          280AI questions

My son is doing a custom 280ai build and I was wondering about that for follow-up shots.

My .280 AI is by far my favorite rifle. 162 gr. eld-x on everything from pigs to elk. The last cow elk shot with it was 312 yrds and dropped where she stood.

Only if it's a Leupold scope with their wide eye box and zoom power turned down to 4x and you don't blink
