If I want to take one down to bare metal, including removing carbon and all, I run iosso paste through it.

This is definitely a know-your-gun situation. I have an old 700ADL that needs 7 or 8 rounds down the tube to start shooting good. Then it shoots real good until about 45 or 50 rounds. Then it starts opening up, and I need to clean it thoroughly and foul it again. It's a hunting rifle in .30-06 so I don't do this ritual very often.

For getting copper out I prefer foaming bore cleaner. Just be sure the barrel is tipped down so the stuff runs out on the garage floor and not into the action.

Carbon can be worse than copper. You may not see it on a patch but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. If you don’t have a bore scope it’s all guesswork. As cheap as they are everybody should have one.

As others have mentioned, be aware that if you are cleaning a hunting rifle you intend to use the first weekend of November… cleaning it may have a negative effect on how it shoots. Shouldn’t be huge, but it’s there. I have multiple rifles that with a clean bore will open up to about 1- 1 1/2 inch groups, but after 20 or so rounds down the tube they tighten back up. One has a weird POI shift as well, about an inch high right, but after the bore gets dirtied back up she goes back. I don’t clean them until I see groups open up telling me she is a little too dirty. I for sure don’t clean them just before gun season unless I have a trip to the range planned.

To answer your question though, yes it can take a while. You probably have layers and layers of copper in there and you are slowly working through it. Might take 10 passes, might take 100 with some bore brush work. In time though, you can get it all out.

Ive used Sweets gun cleaner for really dirty barrels and works well

Do they still make this? It used to be my go to but I never walked away from it because it could damage a barrel if a person was lazy. Just so everyone knows, you do not use sweets in stainless barrels. When working up loads I definitely run patches until they are clean.

I own nothing but stainless barrels and I use sweets. As does a bunch of folks I know. I assume if you let it sit it could damage something?

It says right on the bottle to not use in stainless ( or it used to) D

Yes- do not let it sit very long.

Edit: it no longer states that on the bottle lol. Personally I wouldn’t leave it in the bore for the 15 minutes they state.

Oh this is an easy one. Run a SLOPPY patch of Boretech Eliminator through the barrel, let it sit for 1-24 hours, scrub the **** out of it with a nylon brush soaked in eliminator, wet patch again, wait another 1-24 hours, send a wet patch followed by however many dry patches it takes to come out clean, follow with 1-2 patches of isopropyl alcohol and call it a day. If it’s still dirty go to town with some JB borepaste

Factory guns can often benefit from a little copper fouling. Helps fill in imperfections in the rifling.

Yeah I’ve read a little about that.. I’m not planning on cleaning them every time I shoot, I just figured every now and then.. most of them don’t even get shot so I’m just cleaning them and putting them up..
