Some people like playing sniper and some people like playing Indian. Takes a more expensive scope to play sniper. I'm more of an Indian bc I'll never shoot enough to be a sniper. So I get in close to my target. The only way I'm spending as much as some of these guys if I knew for certain I could see all the way to the end of legal shooting time in the thickets I hunt. Most of the time my scopes dont make the last ten minutes out very clear.

I have used cheap and expensive optics. Currently own both. When I was younger, it hurt to purchase a $3-400 scope. Now days it stings a little less to spend a little more and I’m appreciative of the better quality.

Years back I bought a CVA Wolf muzzleloader for a cheap setup to hunt some archery/muzzleloader only areas on base. I put a cheap $50 something or another scope from cabellas on it. It was a 1-7x32, I remember that. Sighted it in and it held zero fine. Harvested a few deer and never had an issue. One evening in the last few minutes of shooting light I’m sitting on the creek line and I see a buck walk out. With my naked eye I can see him, just can’t fully make out the rack, so I bring the rifle up. Where is that dang buck?! Drop it and there he is. Through the scope again… can’t see him!! That’s when I learned that cheap optics are not your friend. That scope couldn’t gather enough light for me to see him, and I watched him cross the creek and head off into the woods. The next week I bought a Vortex Diamondback(still a budget scope) and it was 100% better.

I don’t go all out on my hunting rifles, but quality is a must. Something like a Leupold VX3 3.5-10 or 4.5-14 with a 50mm objective is great for the hunting I do.

        I’ll say this and leave….

Most people that ask the question the OP asked have never used/looked through a good scope. Once they do, the question goes away.

That being said, there are a lot guys that run scopes that they don’t need….the guy looking through his Leupy Mk 8 with a H59 at his 100yd feeder who has a 100yd range in Dallas to shoot at.

Some are used that I got through trade. Just never had the budget to spend hundreds of dollars on a scope.

So are they scopes that retail over a $100 that you just never paid more than $100 for due to a trade or good deal or whatever?

Or are they legitimate less than $100 dollar retail scopes? Just slightly confused, because to me a true retail scope that’s less than $100 off the shelf isn’t the same as getting a 350$ scope for a **** good deal.

Well one was a Simmons 3-9x50 not sure what it cost brand new but I gave it to a youngster who's dad is on TBH. Another is a nikon BDC I got with a rifle on a trade. One is a Walther that came on my great grandfathers deer rifle that he gave to me.

Yes sir. Nailed it. “My $300 XYZ is crystal clear”. No it’s not. You just don’t know what crystal clear is.

Go look through a Swarovski Z8i. You’ll change your tune fast

Don't get me wrong I like a nice scope but is it necessary to spend the cost of another firearm on a scope that you may only use a couple times a year?
All things are relative. What's the most you would pay for a lease that you would consider perfect for yourself?

I have three Leupold VX5 HD's on my top three rifles. They are all very close in price to the rifles they are on. I can't tell you how much one of these scopes on Tikka CTR in .308 opened up my hunting. That 300 yard shot you made will be a chip shot for you, not your max if you decide to increase your budget. Echo every comment made about great optics.

It’s like a lot of things in life. If you can afford the best quality equipment why would you settle for something less. If you can’t then you have to buy what you can afford. You can always claim that your less expensive scope is just as good as the high dollar ones. But unfortunately you’ll only be fooling yourself.
