Kinda curious what everyone would expect the grouping would be out of a full custom with quality factory ammo like hornady. Especially in a magnum caliber like the 300 prc.

1/2” grouping if you do your part.

Lots of good advice on this thread! You are asking a lot of one rifle-- .25moa @ 1000yds from a light-ish rifle that is suited for back county, with a perfectly slick action, that takes an AICS mag and doesn't run $10k.

          I've had quite a few custom rifles built (22-250ai, 22cm, 6cm, 257wby, 7saum, 7RUM, 300 norma, and 338RUM)-- the 7saum (a 22" 7lb 1oz w/ scope) and 338RUM (just under 9lbs scoped) are the two that really fill specific hunting niches for me (ultra light and long/strong).

I agree the 300wm might be a better choice than the 300prc, more readily available ammo and components and very, very well established load combinations (I think the 300wm/215 berger/H1000 might be one of the most used/tested loads in existence).

I would shy away from a DBM set up on a hunting rifle-- reduce weight AND the things that can(will) go wrong. Worst case-- get a stock that is cut for M5 DBM and you can run a Hawkins oberndorf bottom metal and replce with DBM if you don't like a hinged floorplate.

Stocks-- Ive had a number of different Manners, McMillan, Proof, and Mesa (AG)- For a hunting rifle that is going to be carried far and shot from a variety of positions I like the Manners MCS-T and their EH4 (a shortened/lightened version)-- this profile is completely copied by the Mesa Precision Altitude. Plenty of height at the comb but not a full vertical grip. For my ultralight SAUM I used a Proof Lightweight Hunter (19oz)

Barrel-- Proof is the way to go- not sure anyone has done it as well yet. The CF Bartleins are nice but considerably heavier by profile. Also-- 26" plus a brake is too long for a backcountry hunter. I know plenty of guys say that its fine or run a 26" plus a can-- but it isn't handy to carry and it sure as heck sticks WAYYYY up from a backpack which sucks in the trees and it sucks in open country when its a big flag. I have a 24" on my RUM and a 22" on my SAUM. A 24" for a 300wm (or PRC) would be just fine esp with a brake. Personally- I think that Unknown Munitions is onto something with their 22" 300RUM builds-- they are getting complete powder burn and plenty of velocity with heavy bullets with a handy length rifle-- no doubt there is serious muzzle blast as with my 338 but the recoil isn't bad.... just make sure to have ear pro in.

Action-- Defiance anTi if you can find it, BAT Vesper, Curtis has some lightweight offerings. I wouldn't be scared of Titanium unless you're hunting dangerous game. I have just over 100 rounds through my 338RUM on a Borden Titanium and it has smoothed out quite nicely.

Trigger-- Trigger Tech-- I like flats (TT special) but I have a Diamond on my AR10 and it is simply incredible.

Rings-- Hawkins Lightweight Hybrids-- you can run lows on a Defiance Action with a Sendero Light contour and still fit a 50mm obj.

          So---

          Action: Defiance anti- 22.2oz
          Stock: Manners/Mesa- 30oz
          Barrel: Proof Sendero Light (300wm) 22"-- 40oz
          Brake: Ti 3 port- 2oz
          BDL: Hawkins Oberndorf- 2.6oz
          TT Special: 2oz
          Hawkins Hybrids: 3.4oz
------------------------------------Total: 102.2oz = 6 3/8lbs before scope- which will put you right around 8lbs depending on scope choice

          Just my $.02

Finally found the picture of the 7 WSM group. 3 shots @ 100. 168 Berger vld. Can’t remember exact load data. This is my wife’s gun. I hunt with a tikka t3 lite 270. Bought for less than 500 bucks when they first came out. Has a 3x9x42mm kahles duplex with no turrets. Maybe $1000 all in for it back then. Yeah, my wife’s gets all the cool stuff! Lolololol
