Grandkids started killing deer at the age of 7 yrs old using 223 rifles with rounds that I load.

If cost isn’t a concern then build them a rifle they’ll never outgrow. That’s what we’ve done. I built one for my 5 year old nephew, and he was easily the smallest kid in his class. He was killing as soon as he turned 5 with it. I’ve got a stock in order for my boys rifle already as well, and he turns 2 this week daddy is going to make sure it’s performing well until he’s old enough haha

IMO the perfect kids stock (without regard to price) is a Manners CS. I say this being a massive hater of Manners Composite Stocks. I can’t think any worse of a company, and I absolutely hate supporting them. That said they make the single best kids stock in my opinion, and until someone else can top them I’ll still buy the CS only. Build a 700 style action, and slap it in a CS. Hard to beat for a kids gun that they can grow with. Both of the ones I’ve built have been 6 Creedmoors. Probably add a 22 Creed barrel for my sons as well.

As far as 6.5 Grendel in an AR it’ll absolutely get the job done! Excellent combination for sure.

My daughter started at 7 with .223 wylde and never lost an animal. But I kept everything 50 yards and under and her placement was always EXACT!

After I shot a friends 6.5 Grendel and seen it was no more recoil and WAY more “insurance” I built an upper for her. She has shot it for a few years and also never lost an animal… and doesn’t even know it’s not the same upper she started with. Lol

Awesome round for deer/hog at 200 or less (I keep her at 100, but nephew has killed a dumpster full from 150-180). It’s not a “meat friendly” round… so just know that going forward. You shoot the shoulders… you can write them off.

The Grendel in a bolt action like the CZ is perfect for deer anywhere. IMO

One other thing to consider is the rest. My kids grew up shooting the .223 and the .243 as well as the crossbow held in the Caldwell portable rest. It supports all weight and is dead solid front and back. It pivots on all axis so they can line it up before actually pulling the trigger. They shoot sub one inch groups at 100 yards. It is a big help when hunting as well. Less movement and more safety

I think a suppressor is the most important tool for kids… Muzzle blast will cause them to flinch just as much as recoil.
223 with the right bullets, 6.5g, 6.8 are all great choices

I would say that as slow as a Grendel shoots if you are ruining meat you should thing about using a better bullet.

Agree. I’m curious what bullet he’s using.

We shoot the 123gr SSTs and have not had that issue at all shooting deer in the shoulder.

I think I will go with the grendel and I’m starting the paperwork this week for a suppressor. Dang kids gave me an excuse to start buying toys again

I'm pretty sure him and pigeon toed assassin hunt with fusions but I know he's tried hornady black too. Maybe im the odd ball but I bought my first AR last year in grendel for my little boy to hunt with and that dang gun had some kick too it. More than the 243 I had so that's the route we went

.224 Valkyrie. They make a 90gr bullet that hammers deer and hogs.

My daughter lost a deer she shot with my 223 last year, so I got her a 243. We finally went this weekend and the 243 knocked a deer down in its tracks. She was happy.

The rifle I got is a cheap Savage Axis youth model that came with a Weaver scope. Fits her well. She’s 11.

Yeah that’s odd, like impossible for a cartridge that burns 10+ grains less powder to have more recoil.
