    Kid friendly caliber

A couple of years ago we had to take in my wife’s daughters 4 kids. This year I took the two youngest hunting with me and they absolutely love it. 8 year old girl and 10 year old boy. My question for the ones that have kids hunting,is there anything better than an AR in 6.5 grendal to start them on for pigs first and then deer. They have been shooting a 17hmr and doing pretty good with it.

Short answer; nothing better. My grandsons, 7 and 9 hunt with mine. Get that; "Mine". It's what I hunt with too.

We’ve been having really good success with a ruger 6mm creedmoor. Hits hard and very mild recoil suppressed. Kids and women seem to shoot really well when they aren’t worried about recoil and noise.

I would get a 7mm-08 and start them with reduced loads that they sell factory made and then slowly go into regular load. 10 year old show handle the regular I think. Enjoy the ride.

I’ve started all my kids with a 257 Robert’s and two of them have stuck with this caliber as adults .

.223. Ammunition is cheap enough for them to practice, and decent loads for deer size animals can be had. Lack of recoil and easy for kids to shoot.

The Grendel works, 6.8, even 223 with a copper or psp bullet, or imo basically any caliber that comes in the ar15 platform. I started with a 22-250

I thought about that one but the boy is real small for his age. That’s why I was thinking the AR route with the adjustable stock.

A suppressed Grendel is just about perfect for kids.

I started mine off on a 6.8 spc / suppresed with the AR platform. Ammo is way easier to find, few more choices on the shelf to. But the 6.5 Grendel would be a great one as well.

No experience yet with that caliber. Have one on the way. Upper was just delivered and lower should be here tomorrow. I’ve heard from several it’s perfect for young hunters. My two boys started out with 223.

This, another option might be a crossbow…. My son killed a doe with one after practicing for a hour before.

243, 223, 6.5 grendel, 22-250, 7mm-08 and 300 blackout are just a few that come to mind. Be carful around kids with semiautomatic; just put one in the magazine if you do. I always liked bolt action or single shot for first guns.

Dozens of hogs and a few deer have fell to mine.
My grandson is 6 not very large at 45 lbs and has shot it at the range effectively.
He could probably kill a hog if he could manage to be quiet for longer than it takes to eat an apple. Ha
The adjustable stock is very useful.

You have plenty and a great platform with adjustable length in the stock
